I suspect it is just when using a tee? Say for a driver?
My thought is it saves a bend over. Caddy throws ball, you bend over and tee it up. You only have so many bend overs in life

I also suspect when hitting 'woods' they take special care to be sure there is no sand on the ball, so maybe the caddy cleans them up?
