That is impossible to do around cities, especially at rush hour. Rather, imagine if the road builders had the knowledge back in the '50s as to how many cars would be on the road today, and built enough roadway to accommodate them.
In many cities that are landlocked by mountains, rivers, oceans, even if the DOTs knew, they still would be hampered by not enough space to build roads. Just be respectful of other motorists, and don't do anything stupid!
Pittsburgh is a good example of this, BTW. Foothills on one side, rivers on three sides. Tunnels through hills that were built in the '50s (you know what I mean, you literals!) and are only two lanes each way. An hour to go six miles from downtown to Edgewood between the hours of four and six.
