There are two types of garage door springs... torsion springs and extension springs. Torsion springs are installed above the garage door header. Extension springs are the more visible ones that run parallel to door rails.
Safety cables are
required and
necessary on extension spring doors as VolGuy stated.
Tension spring type doors do not need a safety cable installed. When they break, they are held in place by the rod that goes through the spring.
