If you want the current Apple iphone model (iphone 6), there are no deals. If you are content with the previous generation, then there are deals. Other manufacturers are different but that is the way Apple works. The only exception I have come across with Apple is refurbished products.
You can get an iphone 5c (previous generation) with 8GBytes for $0 upfront and a new 24 month contract. With ATT, you will essentially wind up paying $360 for that phone ($15/month for 24 months when you don't BYOD). For an extra $200 upfront you can have an iphone 6 (4.7" diagonal) with 16 GBytes.
"Free phones" (i.e. $0 upfront when you agree to a new 2 year contract) are not really free. Again, ATT will charge you $15/month for 2 years when you don't bring your own device.
Better deals can be found without a 2-year contract.

I wait until I am entitled to an upgrade and then wait until the model I want is either free or less than $100.......and this assumes our current phones are a problem.
Do you know or ever heard of anybody paying retail?
