if diets worked then why are so many new ones offered each year. If people are over eating then perhaps they need to determine why before they attempt a diet. Once they determine why they need to visit with their doctor to assess what type of dietary needs will meet the goals of controlling weight while keep them healthy.
In my view we should keep an eye out for our health but I'll be darned if at this stage in my life I will be a slave to willpower.
Moderate exercise, easing habits, and a lot of laughter

I agree on "most" points you make here! For me, it's NOT a matter of willpower but of making choices. My metabolism is damaged, as I earlier stated. In looking around I believe it to be true for a good majority of folks otherwise why are the (me included) over-weight and why hasn't eating healthy (as I think I have over the past 15 to 20 years) along with the exercise made us (me) skinny/thin?? Our bodies metabolize foods differently, depending on our 'make-up'. MUCH of our food today has chemicals, hormones and more in them...IF we'd try to eat what is truly organic and fresh perhaps, and this is just that..perhaps we'd be far healthier as a country. Read the thread on High Fat Diets!! There are some good points made in the comments there.
