If you wish to differ with someone, how about starting with "I disagree with you because..." or "I believe you might not know all the facts."
Also, when a thread is started in a seemingly lighthearted way--no lecture, no digging in--ignoring the flavor of the post in favor of a drubbing puts others off. If the thread were something accusatory, all bets are off.

I just wanted to even things out a bit. You came to Graciegirl's rescue as though she wouldn't be able to defend herself. So I thought I would give Caroline the benefit of the doubt, even though I don't know her, that she had good reason to post exactly what she posted.
I didn't think Caroline's remarks were snarky. I think it's just that she has had different experiences with online posting.
