I see both sides. I hate when this wonderful place gets bad publicity. But all it takes is for people to come here just once to see what we see.
It all depends where you sit sometimes.
Most people are just jealous of us who get to spend everyday here on vacation. I would think that anyone who knew you well would know that you have good judgement. AND I agree that some detail in the online news were not necessary.

No, when we go to a 45 year class reunion, or a wedding or funeral where we see relatives /friends we haven't seen in 30-40 years, they DON'T know us and our tastes well enough to decide to spend their
finite vacation budgets of time and money in a "tacky" town "full of old crabby STD carriers" that's not a beach vacation spot.
Most people need to use their vacation time and money for their
favorite places like cruises or beach stays on the Gulf. These tabloid stories are heard too often for many to just disregard the tacky image they portray repeatedly.
