I don't agree with the sentence, I think it was too severe.
However the headline makes it sound as if an intruder broke into the home and was threatening the family.
The article goes on to explain that the violent thug was a 17 year old boy that the father had invited to live with them. A boyfriend of his daughter.
Evidently the daughter was quarreling with her boyfriend and the father fired a warning shot into the wall.
