If used properly, the new approach takes better advantage of a digital medium. The old approach is less efficient. When you have to wait for a phone call, it always comes at a time that is convenient for the Buyer, not the seller. When questions come by digital message, the seller can respond at his convenience at all hours of the day and night.
The Buyer has the opportunity to lock up item even at 3:00 a.m. and if you use Paypal, you can even have the money in your account by the time you get up in the morning.
Those types of items that most often require a personal inspection prior to a commitment do not have to gum up the works because most of your buyers are going to want look before buying, so everybody still has the same chance as with the old system.
With other items, many people, particularly those with lots of online buying experience, realize the importance of just "buy now" and worry later about having to re-sell it themselves if it is not just right.
