Default Batteries hot and sizzling

We bought a remanufacturer Club Car DS in 2007 and all has been well. However just came back from a 2 week absence. During that time I disconnected the charger and took the cart off run. I plugged it in last night and it has been charging for 17 hours and the batteries (8 Trojans) are HOT and you can actually hear them sizzling.

Anyone experience this? The batteries were full of water when were left!

They do go through a process at the end of a charge cycle called gassing when you can hear a sizzling sound and they give off an odor. 17 hours seems like a long cycle to me, I believe my CC (2003 DS) charger shuts off after 12 hours whether the charge is complete or not. I would check the water level, take it for a ride and charge again. Just my opinion and I'm no expert....gn

I am also no expert, but enjoy DIY on my carts and always enjoy chatting about them.

As gn stated, the charger should shut off when the pack is fully charged or long before 17 hours even if it cannot bring the battery set up to charge. If the pack is fully charged and the charger is sending in high voltage this is not good for the life of your batteries.

If it has really been charging 17 hours, I would document the current output of the charger, then I would shut the charger off. Let it sit for an hour and take the voltage of the pack, then the voltage of each battery. The voltage should be very high.

Have you done any work lately? Wires, new OBC?

There are some good folks out here that may have some ideas...

Sounds like the charger isn't cutting off when it should. Will probably cook the batteries.

After I wrote the first note, the charger finally shut off and i took the cart for a ride, All appears to be OK but I certainly thought 17-18 hours was a long time for the charger to be running but moreso what scared me was the heat and sounds comming from the battery area.

Golfnut ....When you mentioned "gassing" that certainly was what i was experiencing. After I disconnected the charger I check the fluid levels and all appeared to be OK.
