Default BISSELL Pet Foundation Grant Awarded for Spay/Neuter

Lake Panasoffkee, FLYOUR Humane Society SPCA is pleased to announce that it was a 2020 grant recipient from the BISSELL Pet Foundation for our “Big Fix Extra” program. The funds from this grant are subsidizing the free and sliding scale spay/neuter vouchers available for the dogs and cats of low-income residents in Sumter County.

With a mission to find every pet a home, BPF focuses their efforts on adoption, spay/neuter, microchipping and emergency support. "Through no fault of their own, wonderful pets end up in the shelter,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “It's a heartbreaking reality that BPF works to prevent through funding for spay and neuter. We are committed to helping our partners save lives."

Benefits of spaying a female pet include a longer, healthier life. Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer and some prostate problems. In addition, spaying and neutering helps to reduce the number of homeless pets and needless suffering. Acting Director, Celine Petrie said, “This support from the BISSELL Pet Foundation allows us to extend our “Big Fix” Spay and Neuter program to an even larger number of pets. Since the beginning of the year, 70 cats and 33 dogs have benefited from the generosity of the BISSELL Pet Foundation.” Funds remain to spay or neuter 50 more cats and 24 more dogs. Interested pet owners may call YOUR Humane Society SPCA’s office for more information at 352-793-9117 and ask for program manager Star Gusman.
