Diane, ya know I'm from around here...florida girl.
hawks here don't get huge, at most 2.5 lbs. and most are smaller than that.
You may be seeing an osprey, as there is a nest on Evans Prairie clearly visible behind the Gilchrist Post office boxes. they won't eat your dog or cat.

This city girl was worried about her dogs. Looked pretty big to me. Oh well - thanks for the nature lesson.

Don't worry at all about alligators. The hawks, eagles, and ospreys will not bother your pets if you are with them.

A matter which should concern you more are fire ants. A pet can be severely injured by them - and they do sting terribly! The giant Florida toads can make your dog or grandchild extremely sick, too, if they ingest any of the toad toxin.

Neither of those critters are laughing matters.
