Leesburg Humane Society!
Today I went to the Leesburg Humane society to volunteer for a couple of hours. I felt compelled to put in a good word for this wonderful organization.
The cages are immaculate, the grounds around the shelter are beautiful and clean, but most importantly the Dogs were happy, healthy and very very clean and brushed. If your considering adoption, please take a little ride out to this animal shelter and look around. It really broke my heart to see many of the dogs are still there since my last visits there last winter. They really need volunteers to walk and give the animals one on one attention. And if you cant volunteer or adopt, please consider a small donation to help feed and care for these sweet homeless animals. The staff there was working incredibly hard to keep things clean and beautiful. And they were so appreciative of our time. I wish all animals shelters were as clean and caring for our homeless pets as this one is.

Thanks Nonie for letting us know that we can donate to an organization that helps to give these beautiful creatures a safe clean place to live while waiting for their forever home.

I totally agree. It is a "no kill' facility. We found our wonderful cat there and have donated ever since. They can use donations of any kind and show their appreciation with a newsletter.

Where are they located? Didn't know Leesburg had their own shelter....we always hear of Sumter County near Lake panosofkee, Marion county or Lake county shelters.

Marianne,
The Leesburg shelter is On Emeralda Island Road. Take 42 East to 452 to Emeralda Road. It is 6/10 of a mile on your left. . It is about a 20 minute ride from The Villages thru beautiful scenic country. you will enjoy the ride and this beautiful shelter!

I was wondering how long it would take you to get seriously involved with some sort of animal thing here. I'm so glad it is such a good one. No kill shelters really do need all of the help and $$ they can get. Thanks for the head's up.

Well,
Im not sure I will get seriously involved this time around. As you know, it became a 20 year addiction up north, and Im trying to spread my wings in my old age! LOL! Not too sure i found my nitch here in the Villages yet. I will attest to one thing tho, Working with the animals sure does make me happier then anything else I have tried so far, yes even pickleball!

Leesburg Humane Society
Thank you so much for telling everyone about this organization. I am also coming off an addition of rescuing animals. I am glad to be away from the worry and stress and I am afraid to visit the shelter. I know that I will fall right back into trying to save the world but this shelter sounds so good that I will go visit them tomorrow and hopefully not come home with any critters. My husband has threatened divorce!!! I do have one rescue, a small chihuahua that was going to be put down. My husband only screamed for a couple of days. Maybe we can meet someday and put our heads together on how to help without without losing our families. Kris in the new Buttonwood area.

Kris, I cant tell you how happy I am that you are going back to help the animals. I thought I could stay away from it too once I moved to The Villages. No matter how busy I got with activities in TV, something was missing. Im sure your feeling the same way. I know you will feel so good once you are back to volunteering.
I have decided to limit myself to only 2 days a week now whereas I was at the shelter 6 to 7 days up north. And like you, I felt I had to "save the world of animals"! My old bones wont let me do that anymore but I feel great offering my time a few hours a week. If you ever need a ride, send me a pm, we could ride together. Bless you for your work with the shelter animals but stay strong! LOL, we dont want you to lose your happy home!

I thought I read a thread here a while back about a shelter that wanted/accepted old blankets and/or towels. Would it be Leesburg or some other shelter?
As with most who moved here, we brought too much with us and I'd like to see some of our stuff put to good use. Thanks, Margaret |
