Default Talk to me about used Kitty Litter in a very HOT TV garage.

We have TWO cats, Mikey, Harry and Hershey, and like all cats all three poop. Now I just wrote that to see if you are paying attention.

The garage down in TV is much hotter than here in Ohio and still the trash can with used Kitty Litter smells bad, I can only imagine how awful it will be in TV.

Does anyone have any advice about how to handle the used litter until trash day?

I have a friend that keeps a small trash can w/lid on the side of the garage behind some bushes. He disposes of dog and kitty poop everyday in that can.

Put dryer sheets in the container for the kitty litter. Keep it separate from the regular garbage and make sure the lid is airtight.

Graciegirl,
I have used flushable litter for years with no problems and no smell.

We have three cats. Samantha and Tigger two cats. He is a big cat and counts as two. ;D Anyway, we save all the zip lock bags from shopping, those we used for other things, and even buy a box of quart size and keep by the litter. Every day when I scoop, just put it in a zip lock bag and toss in the trash. Never any smell or mess. And a good way to at least use those bags for more than one time. By recycling the ones used by us for food storage, those we get from deli etc, I probably have to use one new one every couple weeks. Most times I have a stack of them waiting to be reused. Get a friend or neighbor without pets to save theirs and you will never need new.

When we change litter I just use an empty litter bucket and seal the top with the lid and throw away.

Helene, flushable litter is great for you but deadly for the environment. Feline diseases have been found in sea otters in California and dolphins in Florida. These toxic diseases to aquatic mammals are very cat specific and sewage treatment systems do not effectively eliminate the parasite from wastewater. (Sorry, did have a link for this but can't find it now.)

So, please do not use flushable litter.

I really did not know about either flushable litter or a litter bucket. Plus we have never scooped we have always just pitched.

I thought I was retiring, but you know what? Taking care of my buddies is a full time job. What with removing cat hair from everything daily, and lifting heavy litter boxes, (Sweeties job) and just rubbing tummies, when will I have time to play?

It really is wonderful that The Villages pick up trash twice a week. I have two cats and the trash can in the garage does get stinky. It does help by placing moth balls in the bottom of the can and I am always spraying Lysol in the can as well.

Still haven't found my original link on flushable cat litter, but this one gives the details without all the science:

I have two cats, Ben, Molly, Millie, Jake and Missy. I use flushable litter and only flush the poop; I scoop the clumps (I use wheat based) and put in bags; tied securely. I seldom have an odor problem. If I do, I spray the can w/Lysol.

A friend of mine uses baking soda. she puts baking soda in zip lock bags, dumps the litter in the bags and says it works wonders on odor.

Nanci, it is the feces that causes the problems in the oceans when cat waste is flushed down the toilet. Please try to find another way to dispose of it. It is killing the otters in California and harming the dolphins in Florida.

I have two cats and flush the feces down the toilet bowl every day and change the litter once a week on Wednesdays and put it in the trash with the rest of the garbage and Wednesday night put it out front for pick up and have no smell in the garage.
