Default Visiting Vet Tech

Are there any vet techs in our Villages area who would do a home visit to help with meds for a cat recovering from surgery? I’m concerned that my cat won’t take it in her food. I’m bringing her home today. Just trying to plan ahead.

Please call you vet too see if they have any suggestions, we have used pills pockets, and mixed with her favorite food for liquid medications, and lastly with my spouses help, the forced feed with a dropper.

I learned this many years ago when my wife and I owned two veterinary clinics. For dogs and cats, put a pill in their mouth, hold their mouth closed and blow into their nose for one second and they will swallow the pill.

How to give a cat a pill:

Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil, and blow down drinking straw.

Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

Retrieve cat from neighbor's garage. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door onto neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of Scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw T-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.

Tie the little @!!@#@#$%'s front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of steak filet. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

Consume remainder of Scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and remove pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

Arrange for SPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

If the medicine is in pill form, I have found a piller to be helpful. It’s a little plastic piece that holds the pill in rubber in front. You place this in the throat. You then push the back of the piller in like a syringe, and it forces the pill down the cat’s throat. The hardest part is catching the cat. They cost about $2 at the vet.

The meds I have for her are capsules. She is not eating yet so I can’t open and mix with food. It probably has a bad taste anyway and that won’t work. She is a fighter and by the time I got the capsule into her, she got the taste of it and drooled all over. Very stressful but have to get through it.

Maybe long acting injectable medication is possible? There is a 2 week antibiotic injection if we're talking antibiotics.

Joe

PS I guess this isn't helpful Saturday night. Sorry about that

The more you have handled kitty, the easier it will be. Locating and swaddling your cat in a bath towel usually calms them if they are skittish. Be gentle and talk to them. If using capsules I gently open the jaw just enough to insert pill and hold other hand on the other side to avoid spit outs. Just insert and hold mouth closed for a couple of seconds, maintaining the cat tightly in the towel. Hopefully nails have been clipped. I do that the night before.

You might call mobile groomers and see if they can do this for you also.

Went back to vet. Got same medication in what they call Tiny Tabs, about the size of a tic tac. They should have given that in the first place. Even the tech said he needed help to pill her. She is tough. Should be okay now.
