YOUR Humane Society SPCA Hosting a "Special Pet" During 3 Day Shelter Stay to Bring Awareness

There soon will be a very special "Pet of the Week" at YOUR Humane Society SPCA. Sumter's oldest and largest no-kill shelter will be hosting a unique educational event in order to show the general public how a dog sees life when surrendered at their no-kill shelter in Lake Panasoffkee. The event will run from Saturday, August 17 through Tuesday, August 20. Fans and supporters of the local non-profit animal shelter may recognize this special "pet" as Kris Rotonda, whom they helped in his recent fundraising effort in Central Park, New York. Kris, a power lifter from Safety Harbor, Florida, pulled a 250 lb. tire for 100 miles around Central Park in order to bring awareness to the financial challenges animal shelters nationwide face. Kris is the founder of Jordan's Way Charities and raises proceeds on his Go Fund Me page to help fund pet food needs to a select group of shelters nationwide.

This 72-hour stay at YOUR Humane Society SPCA is intended show the experience of an owner-surrendered dog from its own point of view: what it could be experiencing and questioning while in the shelter's care. Kris wants to stress that pet owners "must take responsibility when being the owner of another life" but when extreme circumstances such as terminal illness, military service, etc. cannot allow them to keep their pet and they have exhausted all options of family and friends, then they must entrust them to a safe haven such as this no-kill shelter. He added that he believes "animals are sensitive beings who form strong emotional bonds, experiencing fear, grief, pain, confusion, joy and unconditional love. They have tremendous value and deserve a lifelong commitment from their people. Come by to meet me as well as the many great adoptable animals. Show your support of this positive place and share the educational importance we want to present to animal lovers."

The media is invited to cover the owner surrender as the 72-hour stay begins at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 17 through its adoption completion at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, August 20 during normal shelter hours. Shelter Director, Joe Sprague, added that "Kris will be living the life of an adoptable shelter dog, being fed, walked, socialized and holding 'interviews' just as the other shelter animals do to find the best match into a forever home. This is an important educational opportunity so people who may have never been to a shelter can not only see ours but much of what an animal experiences going through the process from arrival to adoption." Videos and pictures of Kris's 72-hour stay will be posted on his social media pages Jordan's Way - Home | Facebook as well as YOUR Humane Society SPCA's Facebook page YOUR Humane Society SPCA - Home | Facebook.
