but the sales tax in Marion County is 6% and Sumter is 7% so if I buy the exact same golf cart for $10k in Marion I save $100 or am I missing something?

no you are correct.
The State of Florida's sales tax rate is 6%. additionally, each county can levy additional county sales tax. Sumter has an additional 1%, Marion has no county sales tax.

Many community/counties/states have this type of thing. Not strange at all.

If you live in Sumter County I believe you will be charged the Sumter County rate, irregardless of where you purchased the golf cart.

Rate is determined by where you take delivery of the cart or any other taxable goods or services.

I don't think that's entirely true. I bought a car in Leesburg and paid Sumter County tax rate. Bought another car in Orlando and paid the Sumter County rate. In these instances, it is probably related to where the car is registered, but may apply to other purchases as well.

That being the case, it's best to take delivery in Alaska, Montana, Delaware, New Hampshire or Oregon. They don't have Sales Taxes.

In some states people pay an excise tax on purchases of motor vehicles - don't know if a golf cart fits the definition - . In New Mexico when a person buys a car or truck, new or used, he pays 3% excise tax to the state, but no gross receipts tax, on the purchase price whereas on most other purchases he will pay 5.125% to 8.865% gross receipts (sales) tax, depending upon the county/city in which he makes his purchase.
BTW I know a man who always buys and licenses his pick up trucks in Montana. Californians have been known to buy their more expensive cars in Oregon. People do sales tax shop!
Shopping for liquor across state or county lines to buy it for less occurs all over, too.

California figured that out. They charge the sales tax when you register the car.

We bought our golf cart in Ocala and paid Sumter Co. tax rate.

It is based on the county that you live in. I live in Marion and get the Marion county tax rate when I buy certain products. I am not sure what they are but I do not really care as long as I get the Marion county rate.
In fact when I bought my house, the Sales person mentioned that extra perk.
