Anybody have experience with solar heating a pool? Does it work and any recommendations concerning installers?

Summer is fine but too cold to go swimming during last few months unless
You don't mind swimming in 70 degrees water temperature. Maybe a back-
Up gas system would help.

Using a cover at night will stop heat loss and the pool will be much warmer. When we had a cover on our pool it was over 80 on some days in January and February last year.
The cover was such a pain to take off and put on because of the pool shape that we decided that it wasn't worth the effort. Kidney shaped pools look nice but don't allow covers that can be easily stored on a reel.
If I ever build a pool it will be rectangular so I can install an automatic cover.

Do we need to do something special with the pool / solar plumbing for tonight's freeze?

I lived 3 hrs below us in SW FL...it was a bit warmer there than here, but... The question the salesman posed to me, when I was trying to decide solar or heat pump was...will you get in the pool if it's warm, even if it's cool out?? It was a absolute NO for me, so I went with solar and enjoyed it for many years. Only during the coldest times of the year, I didn't even try to run it, because the air temp was cool.

Keep it circulating. Or drain your roof part of the system
How to do that, check with your installer.
A call to Jack's Solar gives his customers a message on what to do for the freezing temps coming tonight.
