View Full Version : Reflecting on the infinite:

I was just thinking about this the other day while I was shaving. No particular reason other than I was bored, I guess. If I remember correctly, I read about this in a "Wall Street Journal" newspaper column several years ago. This scientist said if you have a line of infinite numbers it would be infinite even if you remove some of the numbers. I'm pretty sure I got that right.

So I was thinking: Anything that is infinite cannot have a beginning or an end. And, for example, you can't take half of something that is infinite, or any portion for that matter, like one tenth.

Are you with me so far? :) The next step, I figure, is to apply it to the human body. Every molecule, atom, or electron in our body has been in existence forever. It seems, therefore, we must be infinite.

To some extent and in broad terms, yes, though the forms change. Dust to dust....remember.

Are you saying that you, yourself are infinite, or that the number of "things" (molecules, atoms, quarks, leptons, bosons, etc.) in your body is infinite?

This reminds me of a quote from Carl Sagan “We are all stardust” and in that context I agree we are infinite.

But are we sure even the elementary particles are truly infinite? Maybe just for this "universe", for lack of a better term.

WOW - I need more coffee to figure this one out.

"How many angels dance on the head of a pin" type question. IMHO

Hey Joe. If I ever get THERE and you and I are assigned the same pin, don't take more than your half, o.k.?

That's a good question. The whole of my personhood can't be infinite because I will cease to exist at some point. Even though I acknowledge that, I can feel infinite as long as all of my parts are working and holding together.

Gee, I hope not.

It may be a matter of semantics, but if you are saying that infinite means having no end then that is what I think of as eternal and therefore I would have to agree, according to my way of thinking.

I believe that there is a "part" of each of us that goes on to another "adventure" for more experience and "learning" and that those parts of each of us are connected to the "whole", or universal consciousness.

Some may think of it as "God" or "All-That-Is" or whatever works for you. For me, it is like we are all a part of a bigger Whole, and that is why we are all connected. It's like a huge mobile.

I have also heard it described as we are each a neuron making up the "brain" of God.....and that has a neat ring to it for me. JMHO

Sorry but I read this and immediately thought of a quote from Animal House……"Can I buy some pot from you?"

We (mankind) are made up of 3 parts, the body (which ends- dies), the emotions,(the soul) and the spirit which lives forever. God planned this when He created man, the evidence... written by God's holy word, in the old & new testament.

It could well be that the only things that are truly infinite are poop threads! Also if we are infinite, then we must ask ourselves "Where will this all end?" To try and find out, we'll need to schedule ourselves some time to ponder these thoughts as well as this whole concept of infinity because our time simply put, is not infinite!

I assume everything is infinite, even though the form might change. Quote by Einstein: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another.

I think you need to give some parameters in order to solve this issue. Do you perceive this "pin" as being infinitely large? :icon_wink:
