View Full Version : Regarding insulation
I recall watching a video about some sort of injected insulation for cinderblock homes. Anyone have any idea about this? If I remember correctly, I watched the short video as a result of something posted here on TOTV.

I thought you could only do it while the house is being built.
The video I saw was for a completed house. A hole was made in the upper part of the wall and this stuff was put in by nozzle type methods. Was very interesting and I just can't seem to find it again. The cold weather has brought that particular short video presentation to mind.....now I just have to see if I remembered it correctly...:)
Don't think this is the one I saw, but it's close. Work I saw was done on exterior.

You might get minimal improvement with injection-type foam, but keep in mind that some of the voids are already filled with concrete (minimum every 8 feet. and either side of all door and window openings). The actual space filled with insulation would be 50% of the wall volume at best.

A vacuum is the best insulator. Next best is "dead air". If the area in your cinder blocks is sealed, and the air doesn't exchange with inside/outside air, filling the holes with insulation isn't going to do anything. What you need is a layer of insulation between the blocks and the inside/outside wall to keep heat from conducting through the solid part of the blocks themselves. Blown Insulation does nothing but stop air from moving...without conducting heat itself. The same principle as a down jacket.
Wall insulation contains a vapor barrier and a reflective surface to keep heat on one side. That is the type of insulation you'd put on the walls next to the concrete blocks.

Actually, the block/stucco walls breathe quite a bit, allowing moisture in from the outside. I have seen the results of batt-type insulation on block walls. Great idea if you're into mildew ranching. What's most commonly used in Florida is styrofoam on the inside walls, which is not affected by moisture.
