Has anyone ever had an M&M candy or given some to your grandchildren? Most likely all of us.

On our morning ABC news today we learned that the colored dyes on M&M's are petroleum based.

I tried to find the actual news report but it isn't posted yet.
However, hyperlink above is basically the gist of it.
(sorry, link broken....will try to find the actual news report of a few minutes ago).

The mother began a petition against the artificial colors.
Europe uses vegetable dyes. So simple; a no brainer, right?

Since artificial color is also in so many other food substances (not just M&M's)
we may all be ingesting a lot more petroleum based dyes than we can even imagine.

So, I guess that's why I've had so much gas lately.

So is that bad? I mean seriously, do we really know if this particular form of petroleum is bad for us. I remember reading about people who would eat a teaspoon of Vaseline every day for the health benefit.

We seem to hear something like this report and automatically think. "That can't be good". Who's to say what's good and bad for us?

Many of the drugs themselves are made from petroleum. In fact, petrolium IS the remains of animals, cooked and pressurized. It's nothing but carbon and hydrogen chains.

They want "natural" coloring? Like the red that's made from ground up insect shells? Enjoy that red velvet cake...beetle shells...yummy!

Their response.......hyperactivity is said to be one of the consequences of the dyes.....maybe limiting candy till things are sorted out would eliminate that worry......

Yea, did she ever consider that sugar, especially refined sugar in the huge amounts found in candy might be contributing to hyperactivity?

That's funny.
Back in the day.
My daddy would be eating what he called slick'em
I later found out it was Vaseline.
It made going potty less painful.
He claimed a doctor told him about it.
He was putting off a hemorrhoid operation as long as he could.

Perhaps you could modify your automobile to run on... well, never mind.

I would say, instead of encouraging the use of vegetable dyes, we should encourage people not to eat candy. Candy itself represents the encouragement of a bad habit. Once started, it could become a life-long habit. (Think weight gain and possibly diabetes, heart disease or cancer.) It always starts out looking completely harmless.

My brother became overweight because he developed a habit of snacking on candy all evening while watching TV. Eventually, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and didn't live long after being diagnosed.

Just another of the many reasons our average lifespan continues to decrease.

Oh wait...never mind...sorry.

If average life expectancy is increasing it's because of advances in medical technology. Many people undergo seemingly endless medical procedures, multiple operations, years of chemotherapy, and various life support systems. Often there's no quality of life left. I hardly call it living. To see what it's like, just visit any nursing home.

I have seen the refernces stating some "petroleum" based elements in select products, but have yet to hear about where is it stated that it is bad for anybody.

I look at it on a basis that ANY foodstuffs I may encounter that contain "petroleum" are in the less than 2% of my total diet......enough said!!!

This reminds me of the warnings in the past about how food cooked on a charcoal grill is "bad for you". Soundly debunked by an analysis that stated one would have to eat so many hundreds of pounds per day to matter.

I am going back to enjoy the other 98% of what I eat every day.

To see what it's like, just visit The Villages.

Out of 100,000 people, we mostly see the active ones who are out-and-about. And the media doesn't focus on the others, it's not good business. They are kept behind closed doors.

Check the obituary page: I estimate there are about 80 or more Villager deaths per month.

FYI, they use a special type petroleum for M&Ms. It's called "light sweet crude".
