I have a bedroom that faces west that is very hot on sunny summer afternoons and is cold in the morning in the winter. The rest of the house is very comfortable during these periods. I have installed 3M film on the windows which has helped but not resolved the issue. Has anyone had success installing a zone on the AC/Heating system that allows a room to run on its own thermostat?

A couple of things that might help . . . For the sun & heat, you could have a solar screen installed on the outside of your window. On the inside, a thermal shade or drape/curtain would help.
A friend of mine turned her lanai into a permanent room and because she wanted to have more control over the heating and cooling in the room, had a Mitsubitshi (yes, same company as the car) unit installed. I will find out the model number. She is very happy with the unit and it does exactly what she wanted it to do

Our west facing bedroom also had that issue until we put an awning over the window. It helped immensely! We went through a distributor from Market's of Marion (can't remember his name). They come out and measure and have samples you can look at to order. They don't recommend coating the windows with a filter.
