Where is the best place to get good bagels? Is Einstein's the only game in town? I don't want rollgels (those puffy rings that are not boiled), but the real thing.

And how about some good belly lox and some homemade garlic and herb cream cheese to spread on first? Then the lox and thin-sliced onion, tomato and cucumber.
Wow! You have my mouth watering and it's not even breakfast.

Now I know how we will pay for our house. I will stop at Carnegie Deli in NYC or Zabar's and buy them out. Then I will open a Kiosk, centrally located in TV and sell all of these wonderful items.
That is, if we don't eat them ourselves.

There is an excellent Bagel Shop in Ocala right off of 200 & 17th. It's in the same shopping center as a Payless Shoe Store and Kmart and a CC's Pizzza. They're made there and they are authentic. It's on the way to Paddock Mall. Totally worth the drive.

Hi, I have had bagels from this shop. They are good, not as good as NYC ones, but quite good. Have also had them frozen and they tasted good.

We lived in NJ for about 7 years and got used to "great" bagels ... Panera's are not bad and their sandwiches are pretty good.

Are Toojay's bagels good? Do they sell them by the dozen or only as part of sandwiches?

As a former brooklyite, i can tell you that it is all about the water.
if the crummy Florida water is filtered before they make the dough the bagel will be great.
guaranteed.
I used to own a pizzeria on the pompano/ft lauderdale border, filtered the water had great pizza. So I am in the know of what i speak.

I love Panera's bagels...try it...you'll love it!
There are only a couple of places that come to mind for good NY Bagels available in Florida, WWW.tastybagels.com, or www.bagelboss.com made in NY and shipped anywhere in the U.S.
LOL, you want a good NY bagel, go to NY... 8)

Kahuna & Gwen,
What I wouldnt give for a good N.Y. or Chicago bagel! Everything else tastes like cardboard. Wish someone in Florida would learn how to make a great bagel. >:(Dont get me started!

Hi Nonie,
If the bagel man can find a way to keep bagels fresh we will bring you some the next time we fly down. Hopefully they will be made that day.
What kind do you like?

I am a Southerner that went Yankee for 25 years and am back to a Southerner.
When I went to my first "breakfast rolls" desk in NJ, they had "dinner" rolls and bagels with butter and cream cheese. In the south we had cinnamon buns and donuts. I had my first bagel. Hard as a rock and tough to chew. As time went by I found out that a fresh bagel and a day old bagel were the same. Hard as a rock and tough to chew.
I now get my bagels at Publix and Albertsons. Both are good if sliced and toasted and covered in butter and jelly.
The rye and raisin at Publix and Albertsons and the Jalapeno at Albertsons are the best. The wife likes the everything bagel.

Earlier in this thread someone mentioned Toojays for bagels but no one commented whether they'd ever tried them. Since everything at Toojays is excellent, I'd be willing to bet Toojays has excellent bagels as well.

Read where we're getting a bakery by The Starbucks in front of Walmart so maybe we'll get some good bagels there.

Yes, that's great. I understand they will make New York style bagels every day. We can't wait.

Are any of you aware that, a plain bagel with nothing on it is 375 calories! :o
I have it on good authority that a bagel shop is going to take over Juan Mexicali's location in Colony Plaza. Let's hope it's New York style bagels not California style bagels.

Great bagels at the bakery on CR466 near Walmart/Starbucks. Bagels are boiled then baked on a stone deck oven New York style.

Looks like Skip was correct. Juan's still have a few "closed for the summer" signs in the window but there is also a hand scribbled big sign that says or implies that it is being replaced or at supplemented with a Bagels, Bagels, and More Bagels.
Also CiCi's Pizza across the parking lot is almost open.

the new Hometown Bakery has GREAT bagels!!!! They boil them and then bake them! We went last weekend and they were SO good!!! Right out of the oven!!! So they are not from NY but they are from Jersey (the owners not the bagels...and perhaps the recipe) and they are GREAT!!!!

Diskman;
If you have your dog lick out the center of the bagel it reduces the calories by almost 100.
I prefer to scoop out all the excess dough in the middle with a fork and then load it with
cream cheese.
Good Luck!
AJ
Hey Graciegirl
Have you tried YALAHA BAKERY ?
They sell some stuff out of the Orange Barn on 441 and their store is on hwy 48 in Yalaha on the way to Howie in the Hills.
They have recently sold to a new owner but I believe it is supposed to stay the same.
HOWEVER, I have a couple feelings about bakery in general.
Since most bakers are no longer using oils with TRANS-FATS, I think that's where most of the good taste and texture went.
And there's a part time resident known as Tom-the-Baker that hangs out at the Chula Pool when he's here. He is a semi-retired bread baker from Long Island and he has imparted to me that good doe is in the water. (and I don't think FL has what it takes.).

The bagels at Old Towne Bakehouse on 466 near Walmart are the best in The Villages. They are boiled and baked the proper way, the nearest you can get to a New York bagel. You can get about 6 different flavours. The owner told me they do a deal on a Bakers Dozen every Friday.

Gracie, we're in luck. They're opening up a Bagels n' Things (could have the name wrong!) near us in The Colony Plaza.
Name I heard was "M. J. Bagel Buzz"!
Go figure.
