View Full Version : TV and Swingers

Here we go again...
I was just talking to my son in Australia. They see his wife's parents (live in Albuquerque, NM, and Egypt) at Christmas, usually going on a two-week trip together. I have met and liked my d-i-l's parents.
My son reports that he actually had to defend us a little bit, because his f-i-l has heard that TV is renown for swingers and wife-swapping. I said, "David, we maybe know 50 people out of the 100,000 that live here. What do I know?"
He said, "Well, you and Dad...?" I said "Thanks for the vote of confidence! What do YOU think? Forty-four years of marriage."
It's amazing to me that some myth about TV would reach all the way to Albuquerque.
My question is... has anyone else heard this? It's not the same as the STD myth.

Haven't heard that one.
But your son is living in New Mexico. Ask him about the aliens in Roswell, Area 51.
That's a fact!
And I'm single. Losing end again. Nothing to swap.

Actually, it's the father-in-law that lives in New Mexico. Our son was defending us. The little angel!

Comes from the book "Leisureville" which concentrated on "Mr. Midnight" and his exploits at Katie Belles. There is/was a "Mr. Midnight" who plied his trade at "Katie Belle'" but he was one man not all of us here!
It's the only view of The Villages that many people outside TV have of here! Its been written about often in the mainstream media all over the world.
Get a copy, read it, and see if you think its the view you have of living here?
The place I read about is not the place I see every day!
p.s. The STD pap comes from what as I remember being 1 line in the book whre the author states that he "talked to a health care worker who told him STD's were a problem here"...no facts to in book to substantiate.

I grew up in Albuquerque and have lived there off and on as an adult. Although I have not lived there full time since 1990 I have been over there about a week each month on business since then. Prior to visiting The Villages in 2010 and 2011 I had never, ever heard anything about TV from anyone in ABQ. Since my visits to TV I have asked several people 55 and over folks I know in ABQ about TV. Only one had ever even heard of it. He was from a town in upstate New York and a couple he knew had moved to TV. Maybe the OP's f-i-l heard about TV in Egypt. Few people I know in ABQ know TV exists and I definitely run with the older crowd.

Ha-ha. TV has a reputation in Egypt! I know this gentleman will not bring what he said up in front of us. And maybe our son over-reacted to what he said. I find it hard to believe the f-i-l was actually asking him about my husband and me.
In any event, I don't even plan to defend TV to anyone who hasn't done some research other than gossip. Not worth the time.

I view this, like the story of 10 people being at a party. When asked to describe someone from a picture to the first person and was to be repeated and whispered to the other 9 people, one at a time. When they got to the tenth person, a man who was 6' tall, dark. and handsome with a full head of hair, turned out to be 5', fat, bald and couldn't get a date if his life depended on it. People sometimes don't check the facts, with the fantasy.
The story with STD if I remember correctly, stated there was a light increase in STD in TV. What wasn't mentioned or glossed over, it was no worse than the national average. It implied, there was more seniors, playing indoor sports.

This is always a hysterical subject to us from two perspectives. One, having lived here for over 3 years and lead a fairly active social life, i.e., Katie Belles, City Fire, all 3 squares, driveway socials and more, we have yet to hear or see any sign of such activity or ever been approached by anyone on the subject. Second, this isn't the University of Florida with tens of thousands of young people, hormones raging, with one thing on their minds. I would think that 99.9% of us retirees are a little more settled than that.
While I believe this has been dramatically exaggerated, it does make for an interesting view of a very quiet community.

I think TV is no different from any other community of people. After all, we all came from 'there'. You have all kinds, but rumors run wilder when it concerns this particular place.

I heard this from friends when I planned on moving here myself. I always wondered, and asked them, if they thought at settlement they told us what our "swing" schedule was and if they REALLY thought it was (almost) a mandatory thing...like we have no say in what we do anymore. (Knock on the door 8PM... "OK, Mr and Mrs X..it's your night to swap with Mr and Mrs Z...now get down there"..."oh, and bring a dish to share"... said the Villages Swap Committee.) Crazy what people think. And then, this raises another question, did they think there was no "swinging", cheating, and other such activities happening in the city we already lived in...I doubt it!!

No, you haven't!!
I am the OP, and honestly, this is the first I've heard of wife swapping being rampant in TV, and it came from an outsider to my son, from a person whom I thought to be less rude. I wanted to know if others knew anything about that, or if it was the same as the STD myth.
I appreciate the responses/keystrokes. Actually got some information (thanks, Senior).

Doctors In Retirement Community Seeing Increase In STDs
THE VILLAGES, Fla.
Doctors in The Villages are seeing increased numbers of seniors afflicted with a health problem most associate with the young. Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise.
The Villages boasts itself as Florida's friendliest hometown. It's one of the state's largest retirement communities, where hits from yesteryear are piped thru the market square and golf carts are the vehicle of choice.
Doctors in the age-restricted community are seeing increased numbers of cases of herpes, and the Human Papillomavirus virus, or HPV.
While statistics aren't yet reflecting the trend, one physician at the Women's Center of The Villages said, even in her years working in Miami, she has never seen so many cases.

I was talking with a married lady friend who told me that there really is quite a bit of the swinging lifestyle here in The Villages. The wearing of a light blue golf shirt is supposed to be a "sign" that you are swing style minded.
The next day, my wife returned from Beall's with a gift for me - a really nice light blue golf shirt!
We had dinner that night with the friend and her husband who had told me about the "sign" and as soon as she saw me in that shirt, she turned beet red and then broke into uncontrollable laughing.
Outside of that, the shirt has evoked no other responses. Darn!

From The Orlando Sentinel
In Central Florida, where The Villages and other retirement communities sprawl across several counties, reported cases of syphilis and chlamydia increased 71 percent among those 55 and older in that same period. And South Florida saw a 60 percent rise in those two sexually transmitted infections among the same age group, according to the Florida Department of Health.

If it is happening - who really cares? Stuff like this, burglaries, spousal abuse, drug abuse, alcoholism, etc. occur in every community so we are probably no different just because we live here - at least its a beautiful, clean, orderly and desirable area to live in despite our internal personal issues

For what it's worth, I checked the website I "saved" for proof.
There was a huge amount of websites for this type of activities, all under The Villages. Again, maybe they are just using a familiar name recognition. However, the posters who did post and are within zero mile, meaning close, some said Lady Lake, others say The Villages, are ranging in ages from 65, 50's , 40's to 28. Most seem married or with a partner. A few singles.
SwingLifeStyle.com was the first such listing that comes up, followed by many many many many more, all claiming to be affiliated with TV.
None of us are nuns or priests (that I know of) however, sometimes where there is smoke, there is fire.....and some truth to all rumors.
I still recall the ADVERTISEMENT on TOTV for a room for rent for anyone needing to relax......it had photos, etc. I wasn't the only one who saw that ad on TOTV (that mysteriously later disappeared) The room was advertised for sure. It has a pole for pole dancing in the corner.......crummy old motel. Cheap chairs outside the door. But the "Pole" was there in all its glory.
So, whoever does the ads, either it slipped their notice......or someone really is advertising for a certain group. Hey, different strokes for different folks.........

You may be surprised what I found when I Googled "Bennington, Vermont swingers" (your hone town of 16,000) lo and behold up popped a listing of Benningtn, Vermont swingers from your neighborhood!
The Internet is filled with false and inaccurate information. We have been in our new hometown, The Villages, and we have not seen one iota of some kind of "swinging lifestyle," ridiculous! We are all the younger Villagers south of 466A too! All that we see are a great bunch of nice people who live life to the fullest.

Just shows how effective viral ad campaigns and techniques can be. I would have thought that, by now, we'd all know that you can't rely on the results page of your Bing, Google etc. search alone. If you try digging deeper you'd realize that, for the most part, it's just location based results when you do a search like that. But please don't try - you'll just be bombarded with various porn sites that can do damage to your computer.
Swingers? Sure I'll bet there are some 'clubs' in TV. But we have 100K adults!
I'm off to buy a light blue shirt as soon as Izod opens! Hope my girlfriend understands.

Maybe alcohol changes your perspective but most 55+ women I have met here have little interest in sex. After a lifetime of raising kids, taking care of families and jobs and houses most of the women I meet are very excited to have "me" time and develop their athletic, artistic or social side without the complications of sexual relationships. And I have met a lot of deeply religious and conservative people who just don't don't seem the type. I have met all kinds of people and have seen no signs they are looking for anything but personal growth and happiness with their friends and families. But then again water seeks it's own level and maybe I am oblivious.

We were on a princess cruise last year and sat with a younger couple from wildwood one morning for breakfast.
We told him we were thinking about making the move over to the Villages..
He laughed a little and explained to us that he was a EMT with wildwood firehouse and that he visits the villages on many occasions. We explained, sure you did, elder population and all that. He laughed and said, no.....they have something called key parties.......you place you keys in a bowl when you enter the home and then the women choose a set of keys and......you know the rest, he said they get calls frequently due to heart attack symptoms.... .....we couldn't belive him, but he seemed responsible enough. So there ya go.....

Two couples decided to spend the weekend at The Villages doing the Lifestyle visit. When they get there, one guy suggests they do as Villagers do and indulge in partner-swapping as a trial.
After 2 hours of solid sex the guy turned to his new partner and said, "Wow! This is the very best sex I've had in years! I wonder how the girls are doing?"

Happydaz, I like your response. There are no wild parties going on in our Village when I take the dogs for their last walk at night. If there are swingers in our neighborhood, they're all tucked safely into bed with lights out by 11 PM.

For what it's worth, when I began researching THE VILLAGES FLORIDA ,since we had heard about it from many people who would visit their parents down there...................and loved it so much (these were younger couples; we were still in our early 50's and working).......I was quite surprised what came up.
I found hundreds of swingers clubs and alternative lifestyles and such. Just type in swingers clubs The Villages Florida. Too many to mention here.
Whether they just are "using the name recognition" or what, who knows?
Who truly knows??? But, we also have (like your son) been warned.
What were you warned about?

One should be careful searching porn sites...............your virus software prevention will tell you they are seeded with many Trojan virus's.

As beautiful and pristine as The Villages is, there is one little thing about living in a cradle to grave community.........you actually know the people you associate with and live around......and their relatives, their parents, their grandparents, and so on.............their children and their grandchildren.
I know for sure we would not fit in if we moved onto a block with swingers.
We haven't even listed our home yet (the kids keep asking WHEN and we say "In April"....or "Early May"....once the lawns are mowed for the first time and spring cleanup has occurred.......but hubby has said, "I'd actually feel safer living in Vermont".........he, of course, knows that Florida is healthier for us as we age in place. It's been an awful winter here so far. He was just thinking out loud.....
It's like "one knows what they have" but not so sure what they are going to.
There are no blocks of swingers.

Yes....and thank you for pointing that out. When I did the search, it came to the same website that The Villages people were advertising on........and as I showed it to my husband , one of the folks listed actually looked like a neighbor of ours....a divorced man.
Since none of us were born under a cabbage patch, I would never deny that this website exists......or that this type of socializing exists......anywhere. Even in our hometown. As someone else said, different strokes for different folks. It is what it is.
But, thanks for pointing it out. Now, everyone will check their own hometowns to see the same.........I'm not worried about contamination of my computer as I have good security which is updated all the time........when I clicked on this one guy's link, it led to a "sign up page".....which of course we didn't continue with.
Since the beginning of the internet, hookups that never might have been so easily made, are now available to everyone........no matter what town they live in.
So now that it has been extablished that there are ads for more than just Thhe Villages........can we please stop bashing The Villages; on this topic.
And return to one of the others that is continuly brought up.

Words of wisdom. I'm sure the long marrieds, widowed, etc. couples or singles in TV are also on the same path as you mention.
A lot of people hang out in all those bars in the town squares that don't even live in THE VILLAGES. Common sense would assure me of that fact.
We've never hung out in bars and something tells me that we won't start in the near future.
Thanks for your post.....it spoke from the heart.
Non villagers are welcome to the town squares to visit the restaurants, etc.
How does one determind they are hanging out at the bars?

Nothing surprises me anymore. Society has changed. The internet has also changed things.
One year ago I was wondering if a certain rental property had been rented out on our Main Street in town.........so I simply googled the address I was wondering about.
Nothing more, nothing less. Just the numerical street address.
I use google as a loose term for using the search engine. It doesn't matter which one I use. It's not always google.
CRAIGS LIST came right up. It showed girls in babydoll p.j.'s
Beneath the photo, it mentioned that it was a "spa".
Well, we have another credible spa in town and I assure you the girls do not wear p.j's. but esthetician type smocks. (Not sure of that spelling).
They do facials, couples massage for Valentine's day, therapeutic massage, etc.
This place on Craigs List looked and appeared to be very seedy.
I won't go into detail but I sent the link to a group of young men in our family and friend group and they all said it looked like a happy ending kind of place and took it as a big joke.
I checked back later and the website got bigger and added a running blog section with people who had visited it "posting". I really felt it was something illegal going on but didn't want to rock the boat......so that was that. I kept thinking that the police should know.
One year later the police admitted they had been investigating this place and one right around the corner........for human trafficking and other "stuff"..........long story. It was now news all over town.
So, I know full well that TIMES HAVE CHANGED. It doesn't matter what search engine one uses......they can find these CRAIGS LIST businesses all over their own states. We found others all over Vermont.....and neighboring Massachusetts.
These "masseuse'" find empty storefronts, revamp them into a "spa" and open up for business..........the "girls" are afraid to speak (said the police) so it's hard to track down where they came from.......but it's a growing business. Once they are brought up here, or wherever, they have no means of returning back to their families. This is not what smalltown Vermont used to be.
I'm just posting this to show that it can happen in the best of towns.
The Main Street that was once the heart and soul of our town, the street our kids would walk home from elementary school, junior high, high school and stop in to chat with all the merchants........go to the movies on a weekend, buy all our clothing, shoes, eat out, etc........has changed.
By the way, we had school buses, but they all loved to walk home in nice weather and Main Street was part of their growing up years.....
Parents today, no matter where in the country, hesitate to let kids walk alone.......and thus have to drive them everyplace.
What really galled the citizens of our town was when the police said their hands were tied; that even though they were performing certain acts, it somehow wasn't illegal enough according to the law. If I was allowed to state what they actually were doing, which I am not, everyone would think it was illegal.
One of the businesses was closed down and the owner taken in. The other one, I believe is still there. Some of the girls were taken away.
Another thing about Craig's List......the ad only stays for about 3 days and then disappears.....to be reborn in another ad.
These lowlifes know their "rights" and they apparently know the letter of the law.....and what they can get away with.
There are no seedy spa's in The Villages.

Gosh I get all excited when I see a beautiful young woman but then I forget why?
The swinger rumor came from Leisureville's Andrew Blechman. He claimed in the book there was a swingers club but he never found it. I have read this book at least three times and I am now convinced he used such sensationalism to hawk his book. The book's excerpts were picked up by newspapers and ergo the continuing g legs for this unsubstantiated rumor.
I also met the neighbors he stayed with here when writing his book.
Blechman believed that when people retired they should stay in their neighborhoods. He couldn't understand the needs and wants of people who worked and saved their entire lives. Florida for instance offers a break on taxes . Because he didn't understand it he took a negative view

Blechman must have heard the rumor when he was researching his book. If I recall correctly he heard or thought it might be the wine club so he attended one of their tastings. Apparently nothing came of it although he reported what he assumed were some humorous double entendres.
Out of curiosity I looked for and found multiple websites listing swingers located in The Villages. Since swingers are everywhere why not The Villages where, being retired, most folks have a lot of time on their hands.
This very recent thread has received over 4000 hits as of the time I write this post so I am going to refer those in the "Vanilla" world who are curious about the "Lifestyle" to a book I just borrowed from the "new" section of my local public library. The name of the book is "Swingland", written by Daniel Stern, at least that is his pen name. At this time I am only about half way through it but it has been fascinating reading about how this subculture functions.

I have heard this does exist. Surprised me a lot, but am pretty sure it does in some way due to the person who told me some sketchy details. And this was Very recently. Perhaps not a large number but guess if we really knew what goes on in society, we would find that TV is just a microcosm of the general population out there. And as more people come here, the more "diversity."

I remember in the 1970s as a young bride in a new community, being told about "key parties". Every time we were asked out socially, I was petrified that the evening would end in a sordid request for key exchanges. But it never happened there, and I doubt it happens much in The Villages either.

Swinging is a lifestyle that is undoubtedly occurring in any modern community, especially a large one of 100k like TV.
Many have argued in other ToTV threads that the citizens are still vibrant, sexual beings at any age, yet argue that casual sex doesn't exist on this thread. Counterintuitive.
The casual, consensual sexual lifestyle at TV likely has more participants than the chess club, but fewer than play pickleball.
Most who enjoy a swingers lifestyle, typically couples, are discreet about it and only share the knowledge with other like minded individuals. Unlike a plumber, who might wear a shirt that says, "plumbers lay better pipe", a swinger would never wear a shirt that says," swinging ain't just for chimpanzees".
How do swingers meet one another then? By mouth.
There are more nudists among you than meets the eye also, but most find that less offensive than swinging. Most, but not all, nudists do not swing. Surveys have shown that more nudists swing than there are swingers in the general population, yet most nudists do not swing; this may reflect the open mindedness of those that are nudists. Surveys also show that more nudists play volleyball than the general population; this may reflect a desire to see body parts jiggle.
Contrary to the belief of some, swingers do not hang out in bars, strip clubs, the adult magazine section of Publix or advertise in the yellow pages. They meet through others with similar interests, just like accordion players and polka enthusiasts.
Spin the bottle and key exchanges with swingers are no more common than are debutante balls for longshoremen on leave.
If I sound like I know something about this, I do a lot of reading. Lol.

If all parties are in complete agreement and they don't do it in public or with malice I guess I see no harm in it. There are terrible things that spouses do to one another and some of those folks may judge swingers harshly.

I see no harm in people doing consensual what they chose to do and logic along those line is troubling. First, I wonder if the kids of these parents agree with statements like this?
These statements explain why this nation has better than a 50% divorce rate. It explains why there are more unwed mothers now than ever before.
Parents are suppose to be role models and disciplinarians. The destruction of the family unit is the single highest cause of this nation's decline
What was once sacrosanct honor ,integrity, allegiance, civility, trust devotion and dedication all seem to be set on a sliding scale . So its OK if I sleep with my neighbors wife I have permission. Its OK if a steal company products because I deserve it and beside they don't pay me enough. Its OK if I file a fraud or exaggerated insurance claim I have paid plenty in insurance premiums........................................an d the beat goes on

There are no facts on this whole thread. People just make up things to say, philosophize, and then make broad sweeping generalizations. As a person who worked in the scientific area it amazes me that people continue to talk about things they have no first hand experience in. Sheer conjecture.
Let's see, I heard from someone on a train in Budapest that the Villages has a devil worshipping cult. They meet in the squares late at night when all the other Villagers are asleep.
