Driving to Long Island

not sure if this is the best thread for this but i am toying with the idea of driving to long island in early feb. my car does not have cruise control so it would be nice to have someone else who could share the driving and expenses....any nice ladies out there who would like to go? send me a pm!

That is a long drive! Have you considered taking the Auto Train? You would board in Sanford and end in Lorton, Virginia. This is a direct train and takes about 17.5 hours one way. It would cut down on the stress of driving and you would only have to make the trek from Lorton to Long Island. Just :click: (http://www.amtrak.com/home) and click on Auto Train Tickets. Being single, I always travel between New York and Florida using the Auto Train.

That's a lot of driving. Maybe think about flying? You'd be there in a matter of hours vs. a few days and with the price of gas, might not be that much more expensive.

ChaCha remember the month of February can bring lots of ice and snow to I95 which is a horrible road to drive.
I recommend you fly and rent a car at the other end as mentioned.

My dear friend, I agree about this. I'd go with you about anywhere but I'm scared of cold and zero experience driving in snow/ice. now if you wanted to fly, I think I'd be up for that.

For one person going that far flying is the way to go. Unless you're staying for a month and need the car.

yes, i used to drive all over the country in my trusty taurus, from north dakota to vegas, to michigan, to ny, to florida, but without cruise control on a smaller car it is too difficult. i guess i will book a flight.

I kinda think flying might be safer than dark icy roads up north. Have a great time in New York. A bit jealous.

would never be going to ny in feb for fun but my brother had a quadruple bypass and i would like to help out for a while. so not much to be jealous about :) thanks for the good wishes....

cha - glad you opted to fly! 95 is no place for anyone [man or woman or two women] to be in feb! if you need a car when you get to long island you can rent one - but driving around there could be tuff, too! 6 to 10 inches of snow expected to fall on the jersey coast tomorrow afternoon and night with 10 to 14 inches possible as far out to smithville, li...who knows what could happen in feb! travel safe and wishes to your brother for a comfortable and speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about your brother, but flying would be the best option. It took me about 23 hours of driving from CT to TV, with one stop overnight. Hotel alone was $110. It is not cost effective to drive and the time consumed, would be better spent, with your brother.

Flying is almost always more cost-effective than driving for one person. Plus safer.

I wish a speedy recovery for your brother and praise to you for being such a considerate sister. I'm looking out the window here in Mt. Laurel, NJ and there's at least 6 inches of snow with possibly another 6 more before it's over. I travel on I95 all the time and even in great weather, it is just an awful highway.
