Apparently certain "war-time" vets with low income can apply for supplemental income from the VA as well as a small Long-term care like benefit. It appears that there are several qualifications that need to be met.

I have not read all of the material so I can't quote many details. But, it appears that it might be available to spouses and surviving spouses of veterans too (under certain circumstances). Remember, if one spouse dies, the survivor is often left with less income!

Still, if you or your spouse were a war-time vet and are struggling with care it is worth looking into it.

Here is a link to the VA for information.

Veterans Pension - Pension (http://www.benefits.va.gov/PENSION/vetpen.asp) - The site says: "VA helps Veterans and their families cope with financial challenges by providing supplemental income through the Veterans Pension benefit. Veterans Pension is a tax-free monetary benefit payable to low-income wartime Veterans."

Aid & Attendance and Housebound - Pension (http://www.benefits.va.gov/pension/aid_attendance_housebound.asp) - the LTC like benefit
