Had a simple $7 lunch at Beef O'Brady's in Southern Race on 1/24. Charged it on a credit card I use only for gas (forgot I didn't have any cash), so it was easy for me to track purchases. Next day, reviewing my account on-line, I found a $745 charge to BestBuy.com posted on my account. I reported the fraud to the credit card company & Beef's, so I'm just reminding you all to be careful. Check your statements closely.

Do you by chance buy gas at RaceTrack or Kangaroo ? Both of them have been mentioned in the past year for cc security breaches.

Happened to us with a card we only use when travelling - came on a bill 3 mos after our trip! Maybe your info was lifted at a gas station earlier and just not used til now?

I give up. The nasty world is finding us. PLEASE read the thread on trash thief and SHRED all important information. Those lowlifes. I am very sad this morning. I was so insensitive yesterday to a friend I really love. And now all these undeniable bad things.

AND it's cold and it's raining.

I just hijacked another thread, The moddies will now yell a me, again.

Don't worry, Gracie. The sun will be back, your friend will brush it off, and the cc thieves and garbage stealers will be around forever! We can't stop them, just protect ourselves against them, as the OP did by checking his cc statement.

You charged a $7 lunch ?

This is not unusual. Many people charge everything on their credit card to build up points for travel, etc.

Cannot believe you blame the restuarant for the problem when you admit forgetting stuff and to not know where the credit breach occoured!!!!
Wow, talk about shooting the messenger. There's no telling who stole his cc number, but it may very well have been Beef O'Brady's, or someone at a gas station. He's just trying to put a heads-up out there. Not accusing anybody.

He said he forgot he didn't have cash.

We'll I hope he stops back with cash and pays the credit card charges so the restaurant can have some profit any charge under $20 is a loss people wonder why businesses are starting to impose credit card fees

As card fraud increases, I don't like handing my card over to a server in a restaurant to pay for the meal. I prefer to swipe it myself.

I am considering going back to using cash till the new chip and PIN cards become common place.

I also do not like the practice of using of smartphones to swipe cards... whose smartphone is it and what is being collected?

We charge EVERYTHING - allows to keep track of expenses and we earn points - and yes we pay it off every month.

I purchase the gas cards from Publix (even when they aren't running the $10 off special). That way if someone has a scanner on the pump, they won't get much and definitely won't get any personal information.

Unfortunately, when people start carrying cash more and more, we can probably look for robberies and/or break-ins to increase. :cus:

Whether or not we pay for purchases by credit cards or cash, we may be vulnerable to thieves and scams. I plan on scrutinizing my credit card bills more often and shredding my paperwork. Thanks for the reminders.

I hate to break it to you but your name address account number pin credit limit and sometimes even your email is encoded in the strip on the card.

You missed my whole point using your credit card for small purchases produces a loss or break even transaction for the business owner. The credit card company wins their getting a percentage plus a transaction fee.Business owner loses anywhere from 2% to 4% plus the fee ..Think before you swipe

Some businesses post that they restrict credit card use to purchases above a certain amount. Most others figure the credit card transaction fee into their cost of doing business. Cash buyers pay this in the price of the item also.

We do the same and really think it is advertising for crooks that see you have cash in your possession. Do not think they are not out there looking for easy money.

Twice we've had our card number used fraudulently and in both cases the credit card company knew before we did. The first time in 2011 someone received a $1000 cash advance at a Walmart store in North Carolina using my Walmart/Discover Card. The second time was this past November with our Master Card someone charged $650 in merchandise at a Target store in New York.

In both cases we received an electronic phone call the same day from the credit card company asking if we had made the charges. In each case the credit card company sent me a form in which we confirmed in writing that it wasn't us and the charges were deleted from our bill.

As far as a retailer losing charges that are less than $20, a retailer is liable for any amount. I had a business for 10 years and anytime a customer disputes a charge you receive notice and have 7 days to reply. Since my business was mail order and internet only we lost every dispute, sometimes they were in the hundreds of dollars.

He said he forgot he didn't have cash.

I feel sorry for the op's misfortune but, gee, I would not forget to bring cash any more than I would forget to wear shoes. (No shoes, no service.)

But I know it can happen. I saw a man checking out groceries at publix and suddenly realized he forgot to bring his wallet.

The question is: Why blame the restaurant?

This is not unusual. Many people charge everything on their credit card to build up points for travel, etc.

I think the bank charges a fee to the business every time a card is used. All these fees add up and becomes an overhead expense that all customers pay, even those who pay cash. We all get to pay a little more so someone can get points.

He is the one who used Beef O Bradys name...Not me. He could have simply said had credit card problems without mentioning their name since he did not who was the blame. So not shooting any messenger like he did.
I understand his point but the name reference was not a valid point.
