I just put in a wireless system - Fortress Security. I installed it myself in about 2-3 hours. It is not monitored, but if the system is alarmed, it will call up to five phone numbers and you can "listen in" when it calls to see if you hear anyone. When the siren goes off, it is 130 dB - I guarantee nobody will stay in the house when it goes off. What I wanted was, if someone came into my house while I was gone, I wanted a siren to go off to scare them away. This does the trick. A one time $120 and no ongoing monthly cost. The system I got included 5 door or window alarms and two motion detectors. Peace of mind.

Looking into simplisafe (simplisafe.com). It is wireless and self installed. There are 3 levels of monitoring. Monitoring does not require a contract. It looks promising. It is probably the one I will install. I have been reading a lot about it. It gets good reviews.

We used Suncoast and are very satisfied. I also like the ability to add smoke/fire protection if you so desire. The service even included an emergency pendant for my elderly mother.

I think that is what I am going to get and add one or two wireless IP cameras that can be viewed on a cell phone or computer. I ordered the camera today.

In both cases, these are easily defeated by simply cutting the cables that are readily accessible on the outside of our houses. The only truly secure way to reach you or a central station is via the cellular network. I doubt that the DIY systems have this and I think systems like ADT charge extra for this service. Alarm.com is one system that I am aware of that was designed around this threat and ONLY uses cellular technology to communicate with you and/or a monitoring station.

We have Xfinity (bundled with tv, internet and phone, but not required) and we really like it. It can be controled from you smartphone or computer. Totally wireless, no phone connections or anything. All sensors are wireless. Keypad is self contained battery powered. Touch screen control panel does require power. Can even control your thermostat for heating and air. It depends on Wifi but if wifi is down goes cellular. Have had great service from Comcast with the security system, had problems with the wifi , they put a wifi entender in and no more problems.

I installed the control pad, 3 door sensors, one motion sensor, a panic button near the bed in the master, a smoke detector, two sirens and a pendent, three yard signs and two window stickers in about 40 minutes. It uses cellular to contact the central station. Cost we $392. Central station monitoring is only $15.95 per month. It is the easiest install I can imagine. Several of my neighbors have them as well. PM me if you want to do this and I can send you a coupon worth 5% off. I expect to get a discount on my home insurance too.

Dennis... what is the monthly cost of the security system. I know you are bundled but could you give an aprox cost?

We are having Comcast install phone, cable, internet, and security on 3/6/14. We were quoted the following:
First 12 months $142.93 and second 12 months $162.93. There is a 3 year contract with the security portion of the bundle and the price may go up considerably. We have the Comcast bundle in our house and these costs are consistent with what we pay and do not include the fees or taxes. Our third year price increased by $20.00 in PA.
The Internet is for the in between plan and the TV is also the middle plan without premium stations. The phone is local and long distance within the US. We have a block for international calls.

I like the fact that Dave Ramsey and Kim Komando are recommending it. They are both stand up people! I will have to look into this one!

A vote for FrontPoint Security. After looking at the top 5 I decided on FrontPoint for several reasons.

They use a national monitoring firm called Rapid Response;

For those with more than one system this becomes an issue of significance.

Most of the others use regional providers.

Their control system is by GE.

Their consultants are 5 star witout a doubt. No pressure to sell. ONLY help you determine what type(s) of coverage create the most comfort for the customer.

The do it yourself is extremely well packaged and the clear and precise step by step set up and operate are flawless.

It was also important to me to have remote capability via my iphone.
I would not by a hard wired system, hence mine had to be cellular based.

The after the sale customer support 24/7 is some of the best I have EVER dealt with. Every single person is well trained and knows the product in detail.

My husband installed Fortress today. The alarm is LOUD if the sensors are broken and I like that it calls our cell phone (if compromised) when we are away from home. I don't think he ordered a big enough system because I want an alarm on every door and window so I'm ordering additional units so we are covered 100%. If Mama ain't happy, no one is happy and I'll be happy when every possible entry is protected. When all is said and done, the cost for the system we bought (plus 5 additional alarms and extra window stickers/yard signs) will be around $280 but with no additional monthly costs.

Thanks, I found the Frontline website. FYI for anyone considering these, they list two wireless models, one which dials out via land line or magic jack type, and one which is cellular phone capable. Prices range from $120-$285 without add-ons.

update: After reading more about this system, the SCM model which supports cellphone compatible dialing, only uses a SMC (AT&T and one other) sim cards, not compatible with Verizon. IMO, I think it's best to have a land line if you want to use the dialing out feature with any of these systems. If you just want to use the alarm system to alert you when sleeping or to scare off a burglar, then any of these systems should work.

Most of the DIY systems can dial out both ways or as E-flyer found other systems that do.

For a crook to cut your phone line is not just walking upto the side of your home and snipping a wire most are underground, so they need to go the the green utility box open that and cut then break in, takes them too much time.

Moreover, if there doing all that it is because they saw a sign that you have alarm protection.

I think it's easier to go to another target for them.

One last point all these systems can dial out to a central station which calls the police. I have one that charges $6 a month, they do the same service as the higher priced ones that rip you off for a lot more $$$.

It doesn't matter where they are located.

The most important part of any alarm system is the sign in front of your home..........
