Any suggestions on how to treat hip pain without an operation? It is getting hard to sleep at night.

You can try massage and acupuncture.

I put up with excruciating hip pain for about 18 months before going to the Orthopaedic Institute (the spelling is correct) in Ocala (Dr. Paul J. Rucinski). I feared I'd need an artificial hip. As it turned out I had an inflamed bursa (bursitis). One injection made it 80 to 90 percent better. A month later a second injection took care of the last 10 to 20 percent. How foolish I was to keep putting off getting the help that I needed. I've been pain free for about 14 months now.

The Orthopaedic Institute phone number is 352 620-1900.

I'd start with going to your doctor. You'd need to have an MRI to determine what's the core-cause. Sometimes it can be from a lumbar disc issue. Sometimes it can be bursitis as someone already said here OR it can be your hip socket. I'd not go to an orthopedic person....yet! Saying this from my experiences with lower back issues and if it's that then you'd want a neuro-surgeon for wise counsel. I'd never, ever go to an orthopedist for a disc issue!! You might just need pt and some anti-inflammatories.

Many times, hip pain ends up being diagnosed as Sciatica. The pain radiating from the longest nerve in your body controlling the butt and leg muscles and is essentially a back problem....really. You should see a good doctor and if you don't have a PCP, it is time to get one.

I am NOT a medical person. I am a card carrying mom.

This sounds like the most fun even if it doesn't work!!!
Getting a massage on Tuesday. If that doesn't work off to Voodoo, anything other than the knife.
It has hurt more sitting around the past 2 days. I will be glad to get back to walking and golf tomorrow!

If it's bursitis you don't need an MRI to find it, unless you have excess money to get rid of. For disc issues, yes. For bursa inflammation, no.

Had bursitis a million years ago and can't for the life of me remember how it was diagnosed. Still remember the pain though - as I recall it never let up.
The pain I have now comes and goes some I'm thinking it is arthritis. How do they diagnose bursitis???

The Dr. started out with an X-ray and then an examination. He pushed with his thumb into the side of my hip. It was pretty obvious that it hurt. About ten minutes later he put an anti-inflammatory injection directly into the bursa. My understanding is that several tendons are attached at the bursa.

It's really to bad that people make light of a condition that I hope they never experience as I know the pain this man is in.I thought this part of the forum would not be a joke.

I would definitely go to a doctor, as I had a excruating hip pain, for almost nine months. It was an excruating especially, when getting in and out of my car, and going to the restroom to do one's business. The doctor prescribed "Naprosan", for weveral months, which did absolutely nothing to ease the pain. I then was switched to "Diclofenac", and I was immensely better in a couple of days. I have free of pain in my hip, for over three years now.

The doctor will figure this out for you and I would rather know what I am dealing with, rather than wonder, what is really happening.

That's just me.

I would be the one you are speaking of. It certainly is NOT a joke, but thank God, not life threatening and treatable. And MANY of us have experienced it and you are right, it is always easier to look back at it and not be in it.

I am way too silly at times.

And I am sorry.

Don't be sorry. I believe I helped the joke to continue. Yes it does hurt, but life is too short to cry.

I think it is bursitis, at least I hope this is it. There is a knot where it hurts. I can still walk 9 holes of golf twice a day, if this darn weather ever breaks!

I do wish there was a good doctor within a golf cart ride???
