View Full Version : Totv not a chat line

It is my belief that the totv was designed to be a way of the comunity communicating those things best in the interest of the villagers. What i am seeing is postings that soon stray far from the orginal subject and often becomes a bantering among individuals. At times it is fun to kid around and poke fun at each other but i don't think this forum is the proper place to
do that.

And how would these people know each other otherwise to kid and banter around if they didn't get to know each other through TOTV?
I have to disagree with you. It's a forum, but forums are not limited to just passing information. I'm sure the Admin would limit this bantering and kidding more if it were inappropriate.
If it gets limited to mere the passing of information, I'd be gone. One can read a newspaper for such stuff.

I guess that would be up to the Admin.

The paper on the maps is no good, the police at the schools are no good, and many other complaints over the years. We live in a retirees paradise and have a forum to enjoy in that paradise. Lighten up and thank your lucky stars you are able to live and post in such a place.

To me, Talk of The Villages is the same as
Chat of The Villages.
Talk implies conversation, and conversations are two-sided.
I think it's supposed to be more than reading a 3x5 index card posted on a cork bulletin board at the laundromat.

I agree that occasionally there is a message meant for only one person that could better be communicated via Personal Message.
But Warren, in my humble opinion, TOTV is meant to be a chat site. Yes, exchange of information is the basis. But I think it's also a place to chat, have fun, express opinions, make jokes, and get side tracked. I have personally grown very fond of some posters on TOTV. Some I've met and I'm lucky to call them friends. Some I've never met, but I respect their opinions and I know I'd like them a lot if I ever get to meet them.
Sorry Warren, I guess my post is a perfect example of what you dislike.

Gee, with this thread posting and the previous thread posting, I would have to guess someone lost big time (by Villages standards) by betting on Denver.:ohdear:

I thought tov was a place for messages - not whining.

It would be wonderful if we had a crystal ball and knew if we liked or didn't like a post before reading it. Unfortunately, no one has that power. Read what you like and don't read what you don't like.

:agree:
Maybe if some people would lighten up, they would have more friends.
One is the values of this site, is that you make friends who will go out of their way to help you. To me, it's a value that no amount of money can be placed on.
I hope to meet you someday Bare.

What a dry piece of toast this forum would be without some of the neighborly fluff we see here. I do agree with you Warren, that some of the ill-natured bantering detracts and upsets, but as for me and my house, bring on the butter and honey!

Personally, I love the banter. We're in PA (snowing AGAIN!), settle on TV house 2/12, and can't officially move there for 2 or 3 years. I feel like I'm getting to know people through the knowledge they share, but also the banter. I can't banter, but feel more like a part of the group we're looking forward to becoming a part of in the future.

The only difference between a chat and a forum is the number of folks chatting. And, oh...that privacy thingie.

Personally, as someone new to The Villages, I have come to really look forward to TOTV. I enjoy the informality of it because it makes me feel so much more welcome to participate occasionally. I think of a forum as so formal, a place for debates, but the very name TALK of the Villages encourages conversation with each other.

I agree with you. It's more informal than a "forum" like you would find at a symposium, conference, or something like that.
And what I like about a forum over a chat room is that people are not on commenting all at the same time. I can't follow a chat room. It just goes down the screen in a line. On the forum, it's divided into subjects, and the posts come one at a time. In a chat room, they're all thrown together.

Almost always---if you have a question you can get an informed answer on TOTV. I like that. You might get several opinions----but I like that too----gives you OPTIONS!

A forum should be totally open line of discussion (with some limits of course). Like another poster stated just read what you want to read.

I agree with many other posters and what they have said here. I lurk, I read, and I am getting to know lots of people in a way that just presenting info wouldn't allow me to know them. I love that I know (or think I do) about the personality of so many of the regulars on TOTV. The wonderful part is also that I can read and have time to respond or hold my 'tongue' and not respond to threads that inflame me in real time. I like that because it gives me time to let my better, more rational, less reactive self take the lead. I think this forum is perfect the way it is. I would hate to see it be a chat room or news feed. Lay on McDuff, and damned be him that first cries "Hold, enough!"
