Speeding Golf Carts

I have noticed a HUGE increase of speeding golf carts.
Mine tops out at 19.9 MPH.
Anybody got a reason to speed here in the bubble?

I've noticed the same thing. Maybe snowbirds, who feel they must get everywhere, as fast as they can, so as to not miss anything? On the other hand, some people have no patience.

I've noticed increased traffic in general, so it pays to be careful out there. For us residents, we have all the time in the world so I let them pass, and go on my merry way and not be peturbed.

I use to feel before being retired, that I had to get anywhere, as fast as I could. Being retired now means, I will enjoy the ride, and plan accordingly for enough time, to get to my destination.

Don't blame the Snow Birds. Yea the traffic is heavy right now. I live here full time and I can tell you I get passed EVERYDAY. My cart is set at 19.9-20 MPH. That's fast enough period. The cart motor, brakes, steering and suspension were designed for that speed period. If you need to go faster drive your car.

I have my cart set to get about 22 mph. I rarely use that extra speed but it does come in handy passing the Villages' rental carts. Most of the time, I clock at 19-20 mph.

Those that go faster are free to pass me all they want. I'll even slow down for them so they can safely get back into the path as soon as possible. Sometimes people do run late and do have to be somewhere at a certain time, retired or no. So, I cut them some slack and let them hurry on by. Doesn't hurt me, helps keep them safe and definitely saves on aggravation.

I would not want to be in a golf cart that flips over! Going fast when no one is around is one thing but in cart traffic it can be dangerous just like in a car.

People are not very patient these days. I was in my cart headed down Pinellas to cross the Sanibal gate to Morse and it was sitting there waiting for traffic to clear. It was one car after the other so I had to sit for a bit, which I don't mind. Another cart pulled up beside me, after being behind me and appeared to be aggravated that it was taking so long to get across. She took a chance at scooting across the road and narrowly missed getting hit with an oncoming car through the gate. It was someone who lives about 5 houses down from me. I am not a risk taker when it comes to crossing at the gates. I guess I'd better be safe than dead!

I also noticed on I-75 when we traveled to Ocala last week and that most everyone was exceeding the speed limit of 70mph.

all who are concerned need to write to county and State officials putting them on notice they are allowing a safety issue to grow in their area of responsibility....golf carts able to go above 19.9 mph.

Secondly request they develop legislation to change to a known safe speed for which the carts were designed.

It is just not neccessary for any reason to have to go any faster.

Going 63 mph in a 60 mph zone gets you 3 miles further AFTER ONE HOUR!!!!!!!
Going 23++ gets you how much further 15 minutes later when arriving where speeding to do so.

The math alone shows how stupid it is to go above 20 mph.

And oh by the way there is no rule that states one must have the pedal to the floor which is how most do drive.

Another very simple problem to a known safety issue that can be EASILY SOLVED.....BUT ISN'T. Now just why is that?

The police do ticket golf carts on the public roads (even in the golf cart lanes) for exceeding 20 mph and the fines are hefty.

Also, if someone has goosed up their golf cart to run over 20 mph and they are involved in an accident, the insurance company will not pay off any claim.

Is the extra mph worth it?

I agree with the OP. It would really pay off for the Sheriff's dept to send a unit to Bailey Trail and keep him/her there. They would make a fortune and money well spent. I think it has really been getting dangerous out there.

This was a first. At the Mallory Gate, I pulled up to the resident side and swiped my card. I started to pull ahead when the car that was behind me almost hit the left side of my truck. He went to the contractors side of the gate, swiped his card and tried to speed ahead of me. I think he was trying to pass while going through the gates.

It was Not a snow bird. He's a local. I know where he lives because he followed me and finally turned into his house.

If this is a new thing, be careful.

I noticed the sheriff has a sign at the bridge. Speed limit is 10 mph. I didn't see too many people doing 10mph, but the sign is there. May they think it's more a suggestion.

It is most interesting to me that many of the same posters that decry any talk of mandatory seat belts in golf carts are all for massive policing for speeding.

You could certainly make an argument that seat belts are just as much of as safety issue as speed.

Wow...a voice of reasoning on this topic. My cart is fast but I only pass folks if they're going under 22.I get a kick out of those that speed up only after they notice me passing.I 'll only pass when it's safe to do so and by having someone speed up while I'm passing them really isn't smart!

What gets me is golf carts that jump into traffic on Morse to pass a slower moving cart.The other night with heavy rain at night a cart left the golf cart path to pass me on Morse.Traffic was very heavy but this person risk their life in those conditions just to turn into De La Vista twenty seconds before me.I also wonder why a person feels the need to be among all those cars by having a street legal cart on Morse Blvd or Buena Vista.

Oh it's getting silly… I pulled up to the 4 way stop sign in my golf cart by the hotel on Old Mill Run heading out of Sumter Landing at the same time as three other CARS so I let all 3 cars go first and then I start to go toward the golf cart path on the right--at the same time, the car behind one of those cars pulled out to make a left hand turn… I stopped -- he motioned me to continue and he stopped.. Furious I motioned him to move.. and then I followed him. What is this..I had right of way, he could have hit me… he clearly was behind the other car…I took the defensive view of his car was bigger than me.. Do these drivers not think??

Golf carts don't speed, people do.

I believe an LSV is allowed over 20-MPH but not more than 25-MPH, 49 C.F.R.s.571 and s. 316.2122. This operated on streets where posting is 35-MPH or less. Gas or Electric. Now you must be licensed, insured, and equipped with the safety features as a car. So they are paying for the privilege of use of the road as a car does.

Some of the closest calls I've had while driving my car have been with golf cart drivers making a left turn from the cart lane. Agreed! Some folks aren't aware of merging into traffic to make a left turn is the correct way to turn.Some are afraid to do so therefore they're afraid of driving their carts here.These folks should stay in their cars!!

After reading all this I'm going to see if I can get my 36 MPH Streetrod Golf Cart jacked up to hit 40 MPH. In the mean time I think I'll take my Vette on the turnpike tomorrow and do another 150 MPH run. (The body may be old but the brain is still young refusing to get old)

Happened to me last week in front of Cane Garden. I still don't know how I didn't hit that cart. No signal, the guy just pulled out of the cart lane and cut across into Cane. I missed him by no more than inches. Scared the he** out of me. I don't know if the cart driver ever knew I was there and that he almost died that day.

I've witnessed some cart drivers do this and it's very dangerous. it's totally amazing how some people don't take the time to realize they may cause harm because heaven forbid they are in a hurry.

Definately. I can't count how many times I've come down Wedgewood in our cart and see drivers come in off one of the side streets, right thru the stop sign, and and never even look to their left and I wonder how in the hell did they get a drivers license and how are they still living. I only pray these people are not driving on the interstates.
