Isn't it against the law to litter? Isn't a cigarette butt liter? There seem to be more butts around and they stay around until someone else picks up their litter.

Smokers please don't litter. :)

Walk around any green on a championship course and you will see many cigarette butts. It is disgusting.

I bet more dog owners pick up their dog's poop than smokers pick up their cigarette butts.:evil6:

Well, I'm here full-time and play courses three or four time per week and I don't see all the butts you are talking about. In fact, I see very few butts on the ground anywhere.

Just my observation and it looks to me like the smokers are picking up after themselves pretty good.

Toss a cigarette butt, go to jail
BY Evan Bernick January 10, 2014 6:54PM

Forget about merely annoying others with bad manners: In Illinois, people who throw cigarette butts on the ground can face jail time — up to a whopping three years.

Illinois’ updated “Litter Control Act” subjects anyone who tosses a cigarette butt outside the trash to criminal penalties. The first offense is a Class B misdemeanor carrying a fine of up to $1,500. The second offense is a Class A misdemeanor. Three strikes and you’re a felon, facing from one year to three years behind bars and a $25,000 fine.

This is one of our many new laws that likely has more to do with raising money than the public good.

I was going to say, Where are you seeing all the cigarette butts? I go to the squares and many other places in The Villages and I can't recall ever seeing a cigarette butt on the ground here.

I frequently see butts on the course - most cigs - but have also seen that god-awful cigar stub as well. I pretty much shake my head and think "what the hell is wrong with people"?

Could you please identify the courses about which you are posting? Have you reported the litter to the course Ambassador[s]? If yes, how did they respond? Do they care?

Just an observance right here in my own yard. I constantly pick up butts in my yard....they are not mine as I ALWAYS DISPOSE PROPERLY! The butts in my yard are as a result of our lawn mowing service. I only recently discovered this as I noticed the rider on the mower always has a cigarette as well as the kid who operates the edger. I do plan to speak to them about this.

I see a lot of cigarette butts at various intersections in and around TV. Many smokers think the whole world is their ash tray.

Occasionaly I observe cigarette butts on golf courses but fewer than years ago. Maybe most golfers have quit smoking!

Illinois owes its employees pension funds billions but is quick to pass a "butt law.". WOW! Sure I'm proud to be from Illinois---emphasis From!

Chicago's got bigger problems than cigarette butts. These type of laws are crazy but unfortunately are becoming a pervasive part of out society.

We do have a pretty nice place to live but there are plenty butts all over. I walk abt. 35 miles a week and see hundreds every day along the streets and cart paths. I don't see many on the golf course though. Also many of the plastic tips to the little cigars and a few cigar butts. I live in Duval and cover all the main roads around this area. There are also many little candy wrappers along the streets. Do people think these just disappear when tossed out their carts or cars? I have no answer but just wish all would be more careful with their trash!

There have been several, actually more than several, at least 6-7 different courses and no I cannot specifically name them. I do not say anything to the ambassadors because quite honestly once I get over my disgust I usually put it out of my mind till someone reminds me on a post such as this. Why do you think people would say they see them if they really don't? What point would that make?

Maybe because it is just their way to 'comment' about a habit they dislike or even abhor.

I get a chuckle out of all the posts re butts/wrappers/paper along the streets as if posters think only villagers toss their trash from cars/carts!

Sounds like an inexpensive ashtray could be logo'd and sold in the pro shops and mercantile stores for people's golf carts and make some money as a golf accessory!

I don't smoke but in my car there is no ash tray so if I did smoke, what am I supposed to do with the butt? Same thing in golf carts--no ash trays. Just saying.

To answer your question - just place an ash tray in your car or cart - cup holders make a great place for an ashtray!

I pick up cigarette butts near the greens and tee boxes all the time. Time to pass a law that you cannot buy a pack of cigarettes unless you return 20 butts at the time of purchase. Sort of like a bottle deposit. That is the only way to solve the problem. I'll bet you will see smokers walking the trails looking for their 20 butts so they can buy more.

That'll never happen (grocery/retail lobbies), but what an excellent idea!
