Am I the only one who's electric bill has doubled??? We have gas heat, hot water, dryer and stove. Didn't use A/C this month. Last month bill was $107.00 this month $ 212.00. Called SECO but got " Looking in to it" . I bet I know what the problem is... the EPA shutting down our coal generating plants............:mad::mad:

Bill.... I have same utility setup as you.

Month ending 1/23 usage was 568KW for 80.85

Curr month ending 2/24 usage was 541KW for 77.71

So, little appreciable difference between the two. Study your bill more closely...an unpaid balance? did they skip an actual reading last month? you could also verify their meter reading vs what your meter says now to make sure they didn't get a bad reading. Regardless, as you say, something is wrong...it certainly should not have doubled.

They did mention a rate increase on Jan 1, but, it appears minor.

If you have a $200+ bill using gas what the heck will my all electric bill be??? That is crazy. Florida use to be inexpensive place to live but now it is not the place to retire to unless you have lots of money.

Look at your cost per kilowatt-hour - SECO charged me 11.2c in January 2013, and 11.7c in January 2014, so up about 5%

You said you have gas for heat, hot water, dryer and stove. SECO is only electric. Was the increase due to your gas bill?

Waiting for a call from another Dept at SECO. Last month was paid on time, this is currant charges. Hopefully it's a mistake or the village residents with all electric homes are really screwed! Don't anyone panic until I verify that this is a correct bill, just wondering if others had their bill double. I will keep you posted...

Did you forget to pay the previous month's bill? That would account for the double amount.:throwtomatoes: Just a thought.

No, TECO is gas bill and that's separate company and it's very inexpensive

looking at bill closer....Daily avg elec use 58 KWH/day Last year same period 22 KWH/day so maybe meter is broken. Nothing changed since then.

this month 1689 KHW used must be an error if no one else noticed any change

You did say you have gas for heat. If it's electric and you used the emergency heat setting you would see a big increase in your bill.

I read somewhere in the past that our electric bill would go up only $5.00 per month when the coal plants are shut down.........like our health insurance premiums are going to be $ 2500.00 lower with the affordable care act.................I have this bridge , in mint condition .......

Check your meter. We got a bill in December for $199. Never had a bill that high, even in the summer. After they reread the meter the bill was $85.

Could it be the disabled nuclear reactor sitting over at Chrystal River, 50 miles due west of The Villages? This has been the biggest debacle in FL's energy history. Google it sometime and read all about it.

Was not aware that SECO had ties to Duke Energy and/or Progressive energy ??????

No Increase in out billl.

It does not sound like what I am going to say is the correct answer for the OP, but I have been told by SECO that I will be billed for 6 weeks rather than 4 becaue they changed the billing cycles. Thus I get two extra weeks before a bill, but it will be larger than usual !!!

Got ours today. Used 1027 kwh and billed $121.46 plus tax.
Says last year daily avg was 19 kWh/ day and this year is 32 kwh/ day.
That includes the pool at 8 hours and heating for 3,200/sf with 2 units.
Better than MI which was. $130.00 for gas with the thermostat set at 57 degrees and sitting empty.

Wendy,
Re-read my posting (below) from the thread about TECO bills tripling. It should explain why. It may not be what you want to hear but should explain.
__________________

Look at the Billing Information. For example, my gas bill (TECO) shows in December that I used 6.2 "therms". January was a cold month and I used 39.4 "therms". The "PGA" is the purchased gas adjustment. That is the cost of gas purchased for the customer by Peoples Gas and delivered to your home. That cost was 88 cents per therm. In December 2012, that cost was 78 cents per them. Prices have increased.

Yes, my bill tripled but it was a very cold month and I stayed warm.

Ask yourselves what your gas heating bill would have been in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, or those other freezing cold places we came from -
and you will probably be glad you pay what you did in January in The Villages.

Check any of your old bills from where you came from and I would bet there is the monthly service charge on those bills, too.
