Kathi - I live in Hadley and thoroughly enjoyed the white pelicans flying overhead last year. Gone for the month, but looking forward to them still hanging around Hadley when I return.

Yes, the American white pelican is really a beautiful bird. Huge, too!
It is fun to watch their synchronized swimming as they herd the fish.

We haven't seen any ducklings born so far this year, but the pond was totally filled with ducks and all kinds of birds, it was magnificent to watch them all day. Playing and flying around, it was a little noisy but all the neighbors were out taking pictures. A wonderful sight to see. As far as the ducklings are concerned, I'm more worried about the large hawks that have been soaring around lately. They will pick up a duckling in a sec,,, wonder if they could kidnap a schnauzer??? only kidding..

I have never heard that a White Pelican will eat a duckling. I have only heard of them eating fish and shellfish like crayfish. Their bills are not the ripping and tearing kind like hawks.

Such a beautiful bird. We played Alamanda yesterday and were saddened to come upon an injured pelican. We were told it had just been attacked by a gator & that authorities had been notified. Do hope the pelican has been looked after & is on the road to recovery. Maybe one day we'll see him/her at Homasassa.

The pelicans follow the ducks. The ducks dive down and stir up the fish then the pelicans have their dinner.

I never knew that there were white pelicans. I thought they were all pink and made of plastic.

Flamingoes are pink and made of plastic. Pelicans are usually wood.

The Sarasota Driving Range pond was full of pelicans this week also. It made me nervous to hit, because even though I can't hit a green, I was sure I'd hit a pelican. I didn't and neither did anyone else while I was there.
