Community service for elderly

Is there a service here in the Villages that checks in a regular manner on elderly residents that live alone, to insure that they are ok?

I believe Community Watch has a program for that purpose.

That would be a great resource for folks that live alone...but think of the poor lady that was in the news yesterday. She was alone, and too young to need a daily check......but almost 6 years and NO ONE checks on her? Yikes! Hope my kids care enough to at least check in the first year :laugh:

I think SUMTER County portion of The Villages
has a service thru the Sheriff Dept.

You sign up for this service with the Sheriff Dept, by telephone
or in person at Sheriff Station .

How it works.

The person calls a certain phone number everyday.
It is called a Daily well-being check-in.
...IF they do not call by 3 PM ....
...a deputy is dispatched to check on the person at their home.

There are private companies which offer the
"I've fallen and I can't get up" bracelets and necklaces.

Of course if you really care about the person......
.....you will ALSO pay for them to have pendant/bracelet to wear...

They simply press the button on pendant and help is dispatched,
if necessary.


Additionally,......"The Other Daughter" advertiser
on TOTV has an up close and personal service.

Make the calls and set up ALL of these services...and PAY it for them.

The Sumter County Sheriff's office offers such a service at NO COST. For details or to sign up, call 352-689-4600. One minor drawback - I think it is only available five days per week.

The Sherrif's service is an excellent program to call in and check on anyone who has such a need and also to follow up if there is no response. I highly recommend it for anyone who is vulnerable and does not have the support of friends or family to ensure that they are safe and well every day.

The Other Daughter is a personal service. I will spend time visiting with the person, take them shopping or get their meds, take the person to a doctor's appointment, visit in the hospital and be their advocate, assist them in looking for an assisted livingor other long term care, work with them to get their home ready for sale if needed and set up an assisted living apartment (downsizing is a very difficult task at this stage of life), arrange estate sales, sale of golf cart and car, interview home health care agencies if the person wants or needs this to stay in their own home, organize medications, take the person for a car ride, shopping, out to eat. I do everything a daughter would do for her parents when the person does not have that type of support. Often it is the daughter or son who hires me to support their parent when they are far away and want to ensure their safety and that their needs are met. I set up email and phone calls with the children to let them know how their parents are doing. I even assist with email and skype and basic computer support.

The Daily Well Check is an excellent service, a friend of mine worked the phones in the Tampa area for their calls and she said that the majority of the persons receiving the calls were so happy to get a phone call. She is a retired lady so she enjoyed spending a few minutes with each of her calls to see if they were eating etc. etc.

On the other hand, we kinda watch out for our neighbors in my little area, we watch to see if the paper is left out on the driveway too long, little stuff, but important to an aging population.
