To start paying the required 9% tax on their rental properties. The FL Department of revenue is getting addresses off rental websites and sending notices to the rental property owners to register their properties for their sale tax certificate so that they can start the mandatory rental tax of 9%.
They just connected my brother in law that advertises in thevillages4rent.com website.
Maybe this will start leveling the:a040: field with those of us that are already registered! :a040: :mademyday:

They will just raise the rent 9% to cover it. Renters seem to pay whatever the asking price is here in TV. After all it's the place to be.

First of all, The Address is not listed on thevillages4rent, so you are wrong on that.
2nd, No THEY won't raise the rent 9% because the renters will pay whatever. It is a very competitive market, outside of January, February & March.
The state compares "ownership records" with "Homestead" records, and then sends a questionaire of what the property is used for. If the owner chooses to lie, then they might get away for a period of time, but "I wouldn't mess with the government if I owned property in The Villages", because my life is too good to mess with the gov over 9%.
That is the owners chance to come straight and from then on, "your life will be good again".

I understand that Florida will forward the information to the IRS --- could be a lot of trouble for some people

There is a state tax requirement for anyone renting out a property for less than six months. Short-term rentals are required to pay a 9 percent lodging tax. Not a big deal, but our property manager collects it and passes the info on each month. We then, must file with the state and send in payments. The application can be filled in online and filed. Our rental is currently being rented for 12 months so our status with the state is inactive. When that changes, we will go back to paying the tax. Better safe than sorry.

I would guess it is possible to contact someone by calling the contact telephone number on the rental listing and asking a few questions.

We used to own a home in Kissimmee, sold it a while back. We were told from day 1, that the S T R tax must be collected. Knew some people who collected it and kept it! We left collected it each time, then let our accountants deal with it. Worked perfectly.
NOW, this is the next thing to really worry about!
Dear Florida Property Owners
Right now in Tallahassee, a very harmful bill is speeding through the legislature that will severely restrict your property rights and strip away the freedom to manage your vacation rental business.
To protect our rights and fight for our jobs WE MUST MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD RIGHT NOW. There are two easy ways to do this: (1) Email the Legislature, (2) Call the committee members who are considering the bill. We NEED YOU TO DO BOTH BEFORE NEXT MONDAY (FEB 3), and we’re making it easy for you.
At the bottom is a list of legislators in the Florida House of Representatives who we need you to contact. There are email addresses and phone numbers for each.
FIRST, SEND THEM EMAILS…
Send an INDIVIDUAL email to EACH of the Representatives on the list (for your convenience, a suggested format is below. If you are pressed for time, you can simply cut and paste – but also feel free to make the words your own):
Dear Representative __________________:
I’m writing today to urge you to oppose HB 307 because the bill will destroy my property rights and those of other vacation property professionals like me. We are a vital part the Florida’s tourism economy. This bill is unnecessary because current law already balances the rights of all property owners. HB 307 would result in severe restrictions that would “zone out” some businesses like mine. With economic recovery just starting, it is the wrong time to impose laws and regulations that will crush our business. Please stand up and protect private property rights in Florida by opposing this harmful bill. VOTE “NO” ON HB 307 in the Business & Professional Regulation Subcommittee meeting on Tuesday, February 4.
Sincerely,
[Your name here]

Making it 15% would help decrease rental properties in TV. Get too many rentals and you will drive this place down badly. Rental properties are like 7-11 stores. They tell a lot about the neiborhood.

Now there is a good thing to read to start the day. I so agree.

I would hope Florida raises the tax to double because rentals here in TV only works against people who view it as a retirement community and not a vacation destination. Why do I object to rentals? Because budgeting and planning will be mis-directed to accommodate vacationers vis a vis retired residents who call this home. There is a sufficient base of year around residents and the red herring of renting is good for our economy is just that a red herring

About the Political Spam you received, you would be better served if you researched the issue instead of taking the bait... and certainly passing the bait along to others!
Here is a recent discussion on the forum about the bill. I posted a link to a news article about the bill. I will admit I did not study the issue closely. My take was that it returned power from the state to local community government.
The details are too complex to discuss in a post.

Well, that told me hasn't it??
I did not receive this as spam, it is on a Florida homeowners forum I am a member off.
I do NOT pass spam in any way shape or form!

The villages4rent.com gives you the option to reveal address....HOWEVER, the FL Dept of Revenue can easily go to "411.com" , click on the "reverse lookup" tab and for any home phone, get the address it attaches to.
