When they open range to "hitting off grass", the first requirement is GRASS!...
Range was in awful condition....To finish on a "positive" note, I hit really good!....Maybe I should always hit off "hardpan"....tee hee

Did you speak to anyone about it? If not perhaps you should before posting about it so that you can be more informative...

You can expect turf conditions to be less than ideal as they transition from the overseed, which is dying out, to the bermudagrass which is just waking up.

You can also see it on the greens where the dying overseed has left some bare spots.

Thanks for the heads up. I appreciate it when golfers let the rest of us know which courses are good, and which are the ones to avoid.

This was worse than that - there was plenty of grass but they were choosing not to use it......if they're going to have those types of conditions, they should just use the mats until the grass grows in well enough to use it.

I would think the driving ranges go thru the heavy traffic as the courses do during the high season.

It's a problem at all the ranges, regardless of the season. If you are not one of the first 5 or 6 people to hit from a small area of grass, the divots have removed most of the grass. This is one area of life where left handed people have an advantage because there is usually grass remaining on the left hand side of the area. I know it probably hurts my game a bit, but I have taken to just hitting off mats or going to one of the off campus driving ranges. For those that want to hit off mats, the mat schedule is M&W at Saratoga, T&TH at Palmer, F&SAT&SUN at Glenview.

I do the same thing, at least this time of year.

If no one is in the tee box next to me I stand there and hit in my tee box off the good grass.

FWIW, the Sarasota range is on mats until sometime in April (I am sorry, I already forget the date:))

PS. Thanks jebartle, I appreciated the OP.
