We live in Amelia. No less than a dozen cops searching around ODell and Corbett. Hopefully they will catch them.

I don't know if this is a result of Code Red but if you have not signed up for it, go to your nearest fire station or someone said you can sign up on line. They will alert you when there is danger of any kind including severe weather. It is all done automatically. We would get alerts when we were snowbirds and back home.

There must be some real danger with so much police presence and a helicopter too. If he was heading east on Banberry in Amelia, he was heading out of The Villages. We will learn something soon I am sure, and I hope no one has been injured.

We did not sign up for any type of notification. I believe there is something called a reverse 911 that enables the police to call you.

From the villagenews

March 21, 2014 By

A burglary suspect is in custody and another is being sought in a joint operation between the Sumter County Sheriffs Office, Lake County Sheriffs Office and Lady Lake Police Department.

It appears there was a burglary in progress this afternoon south of the Village of Caroline, said Lt. Nehemiah Wolfe.

The Lake County Sheriffs Office helicopter had been in the air between 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM, searching for the second suspect.

The helicopter was hovering over County Road 466 in the general vicinity of the Haciendas of Mission Hills.

Law enforcement is conducting a search on the Lake-Sumter county line, looking for a burglary suspect.

Lake County deputies vehicles are on Cherry Lake Road, just outside the Villages as part of the search perimeter.

Dogs are on the ground aiding in the search.

I have a feeling that they've been on increased patrol in our area this week. A couple of days ago I'm pretty sure I saw an unmarked sheriffs patrol car go by our house in Hadley for the first time since moving here in 2011.

I was pretty impressed with the computerized phone alert that blanketed the area where they were searching for a fugitive this afternoon. It was easy to lock the doors and feel safer with that forewarning.

I never had any kind of warning like that where we lived in north suburban Chicago. Then an hour or so later we got the 'all clear' phone call from the sheriff's department.

Three cheers for law enforcement in The Villages and the Sumter County Sheriff, in particular. Well worth the tax dollars we pay for them.

I love that text alert idea. I'm definitely signing up for that! Good job law enforcement! Maybe with a few more like this TV homes won't seem like such easy targets.

Go to the Sumter County Sheriff's website and enroll in Code Red ... then get iphone app for your phone ... be sure to set a special ring tone and text alert for notifications by Code Red.

It worked today ... like others have said, was very impressed with the alert ...it blanketed TV quite well

If we sign up for the phone call why would one need the iPhone app also?

Because you might be outside like we were today. But if you are like my husband, you will never have your phone with you so it won't matter. :a040::a040:

I am NOT familiar with this and it is NOT Codered. I will bump Bogie's connection. No offense intended. Just would like to stick with the tried and true.

We have been on Codered for six years now. It is also connected to the US Weather service and amber alert type thing. They call when an adult who may have alzheimers wanders off..

If anyone signed up for Codered previously and hasn't logged in lately and haven't received any calls or emails this past week, you should try logging in. When you try you should be brought to a page where you can edit your settings and notification choices. If you did not reach this page then you most likely need to apply for a new account. I know this because it happened to me. To reapply or apply for the first time for that account you just need to go to the following webpage and carefully follow the instructions:

Signup Page: https://cne.coderedweb.com/Default.aspx?groupid=3V2%2fWcb0xykV2pOiMpD%2f%2bA% 3d%3d

Note: The links given on previous post are not the same as given above, however there will probably be a link (to the same address I've given above) at the bottom of the page.

Just a word of caution about CodeRed... It isn't reliable.

My wife and I have both our phones signed up for these alerts and we seldom get an alert. Yesterday, neither of us receive the alert. Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. I only know we didn't receive the alert, when I see everyone discussing the alerts on TOTV. We've been on the system about 4 years, but I can count on one hand how many times we've been alerted to anything.

A little technical info.... The system is capable of calling 50,000 phone numbers an hour. If there is bad weather approaching [ie Tornado], you might be 35,000 on the list of calls, so the storm is long gone before you get alerted. Or, like in our case, you might get no alert at all.

It's a good system and everyone should sign up for it, but just know it has it's limitations and it's not the only thing you should depend upon.

Just one persons experience....

I agree. We quite often do not get called at all and some times get called after the storm is several counties away. It doesn't hurt to be signed up, however.
