View Full Version : Suspicious People On My Street

With all the talk lately about being on the watch for people who look out of the ordinary in our neighborhoods, I called community watch this afternoon about 3 people walking up our street and going up to each house and leaving some kind of religious advertising. I was informed by CW that the Supreme Court had ruled that they were allowed to do this and there was nothing they could do about it. Same goes for political solicitation door to door.

I don't like the idea that persons from outside the villages can canvas our neighborhoods and can easily tell who was home who wasn't. I'm fairly new to TV, but I thought that there was a no solicitation policy that was enforced by Community Watch.

Community Watch is correct. According to law, Religious groups, charities and political groups are exempt from the no soliciting policy. They are also except from the Do Not Call rule

I guess you could put a sign on your door, No Solicitation. Other then that you pretty much live on a public street.

How suspicious did they look?

As suspicious as people look who are dressed up the way most of us used to go to church.

I just take their literature and say I'm really not interested.

Here is another thread on the subject.

You are a treasure of wisdom! I agree that anyone in a coat and tie in The Villages would be viewed as suspicious.

Of course, you could always "sic" Helene's trio of attack cats on them.

Well...since I've moved here, I've seen any number of items in peoples yards. Water fountains, cat statues, little fake planters, birds, frogs, flags, big old bright ugly flower pots I assumed (yeah, yeah, know all about that) that if an item was fairly harmless it would be acceptable. Pretty much the same way I assumed people wouldn't let THEIR dogs crap on MY lawn. Or that people wouldn't get on here to seemingly pick fights or mock. There ya go...wrong on 3 counts! Also, if I had an issue with a neighbor, I always went directly to them...no Code Enforcement, no calling police. Hey...that's just me. I am still:a20:

Mr. Buggy : Was this a sarcastic reply directed at the OP ? " You are a Treasure of Wisdom " ? Why do you so often post such missives . It only serves to discourage people from posting at all .

to be honest with ya...we won it at the lottery thing in the square. I've been in Florida for 23 years, and have sent many a pink flamingo home (to Philly) for various and sundried events. Believe it or not, they are a hit there, and my brother still has his flock of 3 in his backyard pool area, in NJ. Also, had a flock of 30 delivered to my lawn once (with a welcome sign) when my mother moved down in her later years so I could take care of her. BUT, I have never had my own pink flamingo. My husband took a liking to this little fellow so we plunked him by the lamp post when we got him. At Christmas we put a wreath on his neck. Afterwards, I moved him back so he wouldn't be such a focal point, and YES, I thinks he looks CUTE in the landscaping. He matches my pink flowers I have out there. Now, as to cat statues, (especially) water fountains, big gaudy planters....I don't particularly care for them...but I don't care what people have . It's their house! Apparently someone was pecked by a flamingo once and has taken a dislike to mine, so I PROBABLY will move it, and as much as I say I'll call and report everybodie's everything else...I won't. That would be mean, petty and UN-NEIGHBORLY. I know it's not "allowed" but it isn't harming anyone, as their things aren't harming me.

Just curious, what happens if you don't remove an item such as a pink flamingo when told to do so?

You go to Villages jail, where Barney holds the key and Aunt Bee brings you pie. Oh, and you might have to share a bunk with Otis.

I'll let ya all know for sure, if I decide to leave it out there. I'm a rule follower too, but my opinion is...it's a disgruntled neighbor I've asked to not let their dog (God help me...here we go) do their "business" on my lawn. More of an "I'll show her" tactic. So be it...like I said, it's petty, un-neighborly and childish. If someone had just come to me, and expressed concern that I was "breaking the rules" and asked me to remove it...like a good neighbor (and NOT State Farm), the same way I calmly walk down my drive to speak about the dog goings quietly, it would have been done immediately. P.S. the code enforcement guy was very nice, and a little embarassed.

More suspicious activity.
Yesterday (Friday, 4/4/14) afternoon sometime between 2-3pm my mother was home alone. (Village of Pinellas) She answered the door (first problem) to a young woman who said she was delivering gourmet food, had a fender bender so was unable to deliver sooooo she would sell at a good price. The lady was turned away. My mother saw no one else & could see no vehicle. When we returned home very late last night we reported the incident to several neighbors via email. One replied a man had come to her house in a truck about the same time with a similar story. We reported the incident today to Sumter County Sheriff & Community ity Watch. We were told that such activity was reported today (4/5/14) in the Hillsborough neighborhood.
Be aware!

The food delivery scam is a common thing - even had someone come into work in NH! They claim they are delivering the "highest quality" gourmet food, beef, etc and it will go bad if they don't sell it quickly. If they'll come in and cook it for me then clean up after...maybe. Ha!

The same thing happened to us yesterday. I didn't answer the door, but my husband did. I didn't even see her. But her story was an old lady died and she was selling (?) her food. I don't know -- it was a really strange story.

Of course, you know the rest of the story. Bye-bye!

Shoot somebody for ringing your doorbell and asking if you want to buy some meat?

However, I do remember a poster on TOTV a couple of years ago who was so paranoid he said he always answered the door with his pistol held behind his back - so I guess you are absolutely right.
