View Full Version : Do you drink

I noticed in another thread a reference that if you never drink, your smarter than the rest. I don't buy that. As a matter of fact, I say beware of anyone that can say, I NEVER drink alcohol. A beer or a glass of wine or a mix is part of the worlds social experience.

I support not drinking folks when they are alcoholics, for religious reasons and so on,

but,

Never in so many things that are normal excepted behavior by the majority can certainly be considered extreme. Beware of extremists. We are a democratic society with a mix of faiths, races, and even entertainment methods. Do your thing your way, but allow others the same courtesy.:posting:

So you support diversity, but a necessary component of diversity is that there is always an "extreme", those who deviate from the "norm" the most. And of course your norm is different from my norm.

If you are in support of extremists I will fight for your right to be that way as long as you will show me the same respect for my views. But more to the point of this thread, is that

To drink in itself does not make a person less aware of the events happening around him/her than a tea toddler. I would think that the drinker, being open to more experiences than the person taking the NEVER extreme approach about drinking, would be better equipped with knowledge; therefore be more aware of true facts.

The adjective 'extreme' is so overused today, and marginalizes those who have a different view from one's own. A person who blows themselves up to make a point is extreme, as is someone who kills others for the same reason. Most everyone else just follows a different drummer. I don't assume that those I intensely disagree with are evil, just those whose actions are also evil.

To drink or not drink? To each his own, if done responsibly.

I'm really not trying to "poke the bear" here, but could argue that ostracizing people who are more different from you than you find comfortable limits your exposure to novel thought and more subject to group-think. I would be very leery of someone who wanted to exclude non-drinkers from their golf foursome or house party because they consider their position to be extreme. It damages both parties, IMO. BTW, I do drink personally, but I'm certainly under no illusion that it leaves me more enlightened. Finally, I'm fiercely supportive of "rights of citizens", even those whose activities are contrary to my religious and moral convictions.

100% agree with what you say. I do not see any post above would cause you to say it.

Again, back to the point of this thread.

Non drinker can be dumb or smart. True or False
Drinker can be dumb or smart. True or False

My thought is as stated before, the drinker has the edge on smart due to the expanded experiences in life, all other aspects like gray matter being equal.

Kinda off topic, but I just finished the Steve Jobs biography and was surprised to learn that he held no small contempt for creatives who had never tried LSD as he believed it left them severely hamstrung by their closed minds.

Well said Santa. I personally do not drink alcohol ( the last was 1 beer when I got married 6 years ago). Drinking just makes me even more stupid than I normally am; and sleepy. I say drink if you want to but respect my decision not to.

What expanded experiences? I don't drink but that doesn't stop me from experiencing everything a drinker does! Except maybe the hangover.

I only drink once day. :ho: From the time I get up to the time I go to bed.:1rotfl: IMO Alcohol is crutch and excuse. :BigApplause: Like It keeps me warm. The buzz helps me make it through the day or I can't remember I was drunk! And the biggest losers are the one's that can't wait for Happy Hour. :BigApplause::BigApplause::1rotfl:

Proven fact Wino's are very healthy. :shocked:Never seen fat one. Never seen one that had blood problems. Seen some that had liver problems.. Beer makes you fat hence the term Beer Belly. Grain Alcohol is the Darth Vader. I can always spot Grain Alcohol (Fancy moonshine) over indulgent. Shakes, Nose is swelled and beat red. One step away from the coffin. As For LSD only Pot head would think it's good thing.:boom: Drink up sooner or later it will get ya...

Its 5 o'clock somewhere!

We have plenty of friends that do not drink and they have just as much fun as we do. They are not smarter than us unless we have one too many.

We have met the type of people you are referring too, the ones who think they are better than everyone else. We choose not to associate with those people.

This is the first post, that I totally agree with you.

It has been proven that people who have one drink per day live longer than teetotalers. People who have a drinking problem like alcoholics, shouldn't be drinking. If someone doesn't want to drink for religious reasons, that's ok too.
Some people don't like the taste of alcohol and that's fine. There are also people that have a family history of alcoholism, that won't drink too. To each his/her own.

Moderation, and tolerance, for all people, is strongly recommended. IMHO

Agree to disagree, respectfully.

So, if one drink a day helps you live longer, I'm thinking I should live to be about 1,000.

And you got me when I became a SAGE. Could that mean it took me Two Thousand Five Hundred Posts to become lovable or the ten years I have been on TOTV that I finally calmed down from my wild life. HUMMMMMM what a dilemma. One thing for sure in my mind, I have came full circle on TOTV and I am ready to accept peace and understanding in my future no matter how different that is from my upbringing.

Of course everyone has the right to driink if they wish, but I don't see any humor in someone drinking as it is a serious application of a drug. How many actually know that alcohol is the only drug that effects EVERY organ of the body. To demonstrate what I mean if you had 3 patients come into your office and one had OD'd on Coke, one on Heroin, and one on Alcohol. Which would you watch more closely. It would be the one that OD's on the alcohol as they have the best chance of dying. Hard to believe, but if you treated addicts you would see this is the practice. Again, everyone who drinks is not going to OD or get drunk and ruin their family but a large percentage do and therefore each should manage their drinking closely. No, I don't drink but I don't make judgements on who do nor do I think less of them. I respect everyones right to drink but don't over look the risks each face and the impact on the family who must deal with those that exceed limits. Humor has no place for the person who is fighting the need to stop or the one who is on his/her way to a Rehab for treatment. There is nothing funny about alcohol. One other point..Take a sponge and put it in the sun and let it really dry out. Take it outside and squeeze it and see it crumble like sand. That is the liver after more than moderate use of alcohol. THere is no cure. Knowlege is important !!

I could also bowl 300 tonight and die of a seizure from the excitement. Actually it's pretty safe I'll be back the way I bowl.
Believe it or not I only drink water when bowling.

I don't view drinking as a stand alone task, accomplishment or act.
I drink different wines with different parts of a meal.

Having a beer with something that goes with it is always more enjoyable, however not much beat a crack your teeth cold beer after a spell in the heat.

The most enjoyable drinks to me are the after dinner drinks and especially the ones that go with a good cigar!

I too have moderated in my maturity and drink on all national holidays and I think this might be national peanut week!

On the serious side, those of us in favor of drinking are not advocating a 190 proof ever clear IV in A vain, but having a drink or three with friends. Remember the reference to extreme for or against anything. I.e. Do all in moderation. That should include your tolerance of others.

Good information and I too do not drink, never have.

Many, many, problems have long been identified with even casual drinking, most if not all alcoholics started as casual social drinkers, but you really have to know your audience to know how information will likely be taken....or not.
