For simple mowing and edging? How often is it usually necessary to cut grass? Same summer and winter? I'm not used to Florida weather so it will take a while to get up to speed. Is it usually necessary to do lawn insect control? Is once or twice a year fertilization sufficient? I want to do enough but not overkill or over pay.

Usually $35 per month or $45 for a corner lot property for just mowing.
I usally cut my own hedges.
I you are really lucky, you find might someone that does both, for almost the same price but I sincerely doubt it.

Mowing and edging for a typical designer lot should be around fifty bucks a month or a little more. But please remember that they mow a lot more in the growing season than in the dormant season, and it is only fair to pay them the same all year 'round.
Weeding and trimming bushes costs more.
It is a BARGAIN compared to up North and most of us are very happy with the lawn care people.

$50 monthly includes mowing, edging, hand weeding flower beds. Extra services thru same company is Shrub trimming @ $65(last company quoted $90/hr., so I did it myself), will mulch flower beds, fertilizer (has license), irrigation system service.
My lawn has improved greatly with push mower mowing, no more skinned lawn, dull blades tearing the grass, weeds being imported on commercial mowers. I am extremely pleased with Austin Mayo Landscaping service,
