We have the original GE dishwasher (4yrs old) that has stopped draining. The sink drains fine and we have run the disposal but that hasn't fixed the problem. We can't find a filter in the dishwasher to clean and the manual doesn't mentioned one. Any suggestions as to how to fix the darn thing?

dishwashers don't drain like a kitchen sink. Rather than draining by gravity, dishwashers have a pump that pushes the water into the kitchen drain thru the garbage disposal (if you have a disposal). I would guess your pump is out of order.

Call Jim Risley, 352-348-3411, small appliance repair. We called about the microwave not working properly. He could have told us it was BROKE, BUT FOUND a loose wire which testifies to his honesty. He is honest and does good work. You will get other recommendations, stay turned.

If the garbage disposal is new you need to punch out a plug in the nipple that the dishwasher drain connects to.

I had to have my dishwasher repaired. In my case, the problem came from putting too much stuff in the disposal. The disposal and dishwasher use the same drain and the drain pipe was stopped up. The repairman actually told me that with these disposals you should not put potato and fruit peelings in them. He said they're really only good for scraping your plate after dinner. Unlike any disposal I ever had before, but it is what it is, which is a piece of c**p.

If you are able to, disconnect the dishwasher drain where it empties into the garbage disposal. Place the end of the drain hose into a bucket. Turn on the dishwasher and enter a drain cycle. Check to see if water drains into the bucket. If it's slow or non existent, you might have a clogged or kinked drain hose. If pumps out with good force, the nipple going into the garbage disposal might be restricted with food waste. Clear it out with a popsicle stick or screwdriver.
