View Full Version : Health Insurance Prescription Plan - Advice Appreciated!

I have my insurance via United Health.

The original plan had a $200 deductible (unless it is a tier 1 drug) and $3000 yearly cap on prescriptions.
I did a buy up when I bought the policy so for an extra cost of $24 a month there is a $200 deductible but no cap on my prescription limit.

My current yearly cost for prescriptions is very low - maybe $50.
So for the past 5 years I have been paying $24 a month for something I don't use.

BUT the reason I did the buy up was because a friend of mine had a serious illness and she was telling me how expensive the drugs were. So I bought it for peace of mind.

Yesterday I talked to my insurance company about something else and discussed it with them. I was surprised to find out that I have a section in my policy that would cover some serious drugs under the medical plan though it could also go thru the prescription plan. Drugs for cancer, HIV etc. could go thru my medical plan. Not all expensive drugs excluded were insulin and others but it seemed that many could.

So knowing that I wonder if I need the $24 upsell plan at all? It may not seem like much but it works out to close to $300 a year for something I am not using. My first thought is no, but I was talking to a doctor and he said he has many patients taking $600 worth of drugs a month!

So my question then is really should I keep it or not? Once it is removed it would be very hard to get back.

Do you spend a lot in prescription drugs that you would not want a $3000 cap. keeping in mind some of the very expensive drugs are paid for under the medical provisions of the plan?

Thanks all!
