As of May 1st, according to the WSJ, Amazon will start collecting 6% sales tax because they are building a distribution center in Florida.:grumpy:

This is good news and bad news; bad news for Amazon shoppers but good news for the state of Florida, which will now collect millions of dollars in sales tax and will add 2500 well-paying jobs. Two additional Amazon warehouses are planned for Florida.

Just more taxes out of our pocket. Screwed again but that is the way of the future. They just can't stop spending and waisting our money.

According to the WSJ Governor Scott postponed this twice, but gave up when they said they were going to build the distribution center.

Yup. But we don't have to pay State income tax. AND it will bring money into the state from everyone in the country who buys from Amazon.

I got so used to paying 7% or 8% tax on everything in New York, no wonder it seems cheaper here. Sorry to hear about Amazon though. However Jeff Bezos says he doesn't care whether he makes a profit or not, so maybe he will reduce prices on goods.

About a year ago we had to begin paying 6% PA tax when shopping at amazon. The year prior it was optional on our state income tax to estimate how much we owed the state for sales tax not collected on line. The concept must not have caught on with the honor system.

No, the tax will be collected from the people in FL who ship to a FL address, not from everyone in the country.

I was thinking about this and wondered if that were so. Thanks Gustavo for correcting my incorrect post.

It would have been nice.

I am willing to pay the tax,as I save a lot of money for gas,

I find shopping at Amazon great, as they deliver your goods, to your doorstep, Easy Peazy.

If I had joined "prime", I could have saved a lot of money, in shipping fees.

Oh Well, "nobody's perfect".

There is no time limit to join Prime. I actually bought a Prime gift membership for myself before the price went up last month and Amazon will be sending it to me next November when my current Prime expires.:pepper2:

I, for one, am thrilled that Amazon is coming to Florida with their new distribution centers - taxes or no taxes! My son, who has lived in TN, working for Amazon for many years, will be moving to Lakeland as one of their managers! Will be so nice to have my son so much closer!

In all fairness, however, I shopped at and loved Amazon before he worked there. I've always shopped there first.

Yes, I heard this on the news a few weeks ago. Too bad for us shoppers in Florida. I guess it's good to have a distribution center closer for the jobs.

I'm so happy that Amazon is coming to FL. Good jobs for our fellow citizens who are still looking for a great company to work for... as for sales tax... whatever. I shop Kohl's on line all the time and happily pay the 7%...
My home state of NH boasts no sales tax or income tax, but the state is in such terrible shape that property taxes are again on the rise. And it won't be enough.
We love our FL home and hope that FL will continue to attract employers to bring up the income of those who live around us.
And, I'm a prime member. Absolutely so worth it - free shipping and it arrives in two days.. Instant gratification for a reasonable flat rate.

Not a problem. Many of the online sites charge sales tax.

It is amazing how automated the Amazon distribution centers are. I saw a video of one in action, and there was no human in sight. And in the future deliveries will be made by drones. I became an Amazon Prime member to catch up on Breaking Bad. Now I'm hooked on the shopping. Not too crazy about paying more, but the sight is just like crack.

He may not care about profits but what about the shareowners! I'm sure they appreciate the fact that each share they own is down $100.00 since the 22nd of January. Glad I never took the plunge.:ho:

Amazon will never be a brick and mortar store. They are building a distribution center. Their distribution centers are completely automated; human hands never touch your order. But they do employ a lot of people, so that has to be good for Florida.

You are so right Amazon is just like crack. You can get anything at the click of the mouse. I rarely drive all over town looking for a certain item anymore. I have a prime membership with the free shipping and love it. You can even buy Trader Joe's foods on Amazon. I even bought our flat screen 50" TV on Amazon. Free shipping and $150 cheaper than the box store and I didn't have to worry about getting a truck to carry it home. Amazon is amazing.

I believe we have been paying sales tax in GA since September 2013. It only applies to orders fulfilled by Amazon and not necessarily other vendors selling on their site. We will continue to use our Prime account!

You are partially correct about Amazon collecting sales tax in Florida.

Yes! They will be collecting sales tax here,.
However, they will be collecting sales tax throughout the country,
not only just here in Florida.

Just as a point of information, Amazon owns Zappos and 6pm --
both huge Internet sales sites.

I think with Amazon doing this,
it is only the beginning of things to come.

Regarding "things to come" . . . No, not ominous.

I'm sure that more and more Internet companies
will begin charging sales tax. I even suspect that
the government will step in because they are losing
mucho bucks with all this sales tax slipping through their fingers.

They can only collect sales tax if the company has a presence in the state where the order is shipped. If the company store is in Wisconsin they can't collect sales tax on an order shipped to Florida.

It's a tax that's been on the books for a long time. You just haven't been paying it. You can have Florida's sales tax or an income tax or higher property taxes, but if you want roads and all other government services, then you have to pay for them. Paying taxes for the common good that we all use all the time is not getting "screwed again." As they say, "there is no free lunch," or equally appropriate, "you get what you pay for."

This is a done deal. My order placed today got charged sales tax for the first time. Together with the price increase for amazon prime, it takes away a lot of the price incentive to stay with amazon. It is still convenient, but I think I will drop the prime. Probably cut down a lot on impulse buying.
