You are right perrjojo, you can influence change by not how you run your mouth, but how you run your life.

perrjojo: Certainly that is one way to view the world today. However point to the "good examples" young people follow today. would that be the Kardashians of the world? How about Whitney Houston Pay close attention to what young people view as their priorities. Why is there a higher percentage of single mothers today given abortion rights, free contraceptives, sex education?. We could go on and on

I opine others can decide.

one thing for certain that has changed is the advances in technology have altered what and how we see the world......communications.

The advent of 24/7 instant, happening now news, sports, events, etc. reporting.

Unfortunate side effects:
> it is it is the only input for far too many people.

> those with the money control the messaging whether it is entertainment, news or politics.

> there is no requirement for anything to be true to be reported.

> the credo of if it bleeds it leads affects both news and entertainment, with emphasis on the good relegated to a secondary position.

In closing if I may....just watching the evening national news...any one of the alphabet networks....they spend 29 minutes highlighting the most recent atrocities of man VS man.....natures devastation.....etc....and usually one minute at the end of the broadcast of something truly warm and wonderful.

I for one believe the priorities are skewed in the wrong direction.......however the media will only proclaim they provide what the audience want to see/hear most.....which I personally do not believe or accept.

Lots of people go to church every Sunday to listen to a sermon. Their opinion is that if you do XYZ, you will go to heaven when you die.

The Villages/ USF health alliance has sponsored many lectures. Their opinion is that they are going to revolutionize health care.

People sign up for classes at the Villages college. Their opinion is that they will enrich your life and make you happier etc..

I am amazed that someone can think that sex education and access to birth control leads to a higher incidence of single mothers. Maybe if we required all women to wear a hijab?

We had sex education in our public high school in the fifties. And sexual activity was far less....less(?) than it is now. I am a huge fan of sex education. And of birth control. I also know how huge stadiums full of people each got their start. So after all is said and done I think the best advice after the moral advice to the children who we are responsible for is.."When you become sexually active, protect yourself against conception and disease". Not only drugs can ruin your life. And don't drink and drive. AND save your money.

Here's one, My kids can't seem to be without checking their cell phones constantly. I tried having them check them at the door but.....they always seem to have some important thing going on....ie MY SIL had to work.

Also My SIL always seems to be working due technology....cell, computers etc.

I am glad he is a hard worker but he needs a break.

Hi BarryRX: Check the records there are more single moms today than at any time in the history of America.

secondly I think the opposite. I am not saying sex ed ,etc created this problem I am saying that in spite of sex ed, contraceptives and abortions we now have more single mothers. In other words sex ed, contraceptives and abortions are a bust

And as to the hijab comment at least Muslims, while over board, recognize that some acts are shameful. We have very young girls dressing like and walking around and acting like they work in red light districts .

What the heck is wrong with us

The comment regarding young girls dressing like hookers reflects on the parents of those girls. If Mom and Dad did not pay for the clothes, it would not happen. If Mom and Dad said, "No, you will not go out in clothes like that", it would not happen.

Nothing you can say will keep a girl from trying sex. At least with sex ed, condoms, and contraceptives, there is a lesser chance of disease or pregnancy than without them.

Do you want your daughters to fear sex like the young Muslims and be stoned for getting pregnant or shunned by their family?

Educate, love, and support them.

Hi Rubicon, I obviously misinterpreted your post. We are truly living in a very different world today. People readily live together and have children without ever intending to marry. Young boys and girls appear to be sexually active at a much younger age. But I still remember the days when condoms were only sold behind the counter in my Dads drugstore, and women were shamed for the same behavior that men were proud of. Just imagine how many more single mothers there would be if girls still believed that "if we do it standing up, you won't get pregnant". You are right that there seems to be a moral decay in our society, but the root cause is not knowledge and power (sex ed and access to birth control).

Well, we must have forgotten about the 60's. Sex and drugs and rock and roll. Mini skirts, burn the bra, makeup like Barbarella. Fillmore East, Fillmore West, Whisky a Go Go. 1967 Monterrey Pop Festival, Woodstock, concert at Altamont. Heck, let's throw in war protests, race riots, and assassinations. Talk about moral decay. And where is that generation now? Right here in The Villages. Somehow things work out.

Your right. When I walked around in engineer boots with a pack of lucky's rolled up in my sleeve, I was told many times, that my generation was destroying civilization. I say it all the time, I think we are better off today than any other generation before us.

BarryRX: The problem with America today is that we cannot have a serious national conversation about anything. People are so invested in their positions that you can't get them to listen.

The issue here is "world has changed" but it hasn't people are in America have moved from a push for rights into the 60's to a entitlement on everything and with responsibility etc. Merit, sacrifice working out problems on their own has long been forgotten.

It causes me a furrow brow when someone says sex education is needed because all kids have sex. So what we do is teach kids how to have sex instead of offering alternatives and/or ways to deflect it until the person can be responsible for their act. Kids view sex as if it were a hand shake hooking up on a continuum.

In past years and generation abstinence was a way of life. Getting to know a person working on the relationship preparing to support a family were essential and they solidified relationships

I missed the 60's because I married young, was working and going to college at night to build a life for my family. No time to drop out get high, protest because I was trying to survive.

I am praying that this youngest generation has taken stock of each successive generation since the baby boomers and has figured out what works and what doesn't work and what does

Allow me to keep it short and simply say I support what you say !

Especially "The problem with America today is that we cannot have a serious national conversation about anything. People are so invested in their positions that you can't get them to listen. "

Everyone is so entrenched they listen to what is preached by their "preacher" and allow that to guide them in everything.

I have enjoyed reading all of the post on this thread and think all of the ideas are meaningful. However, I think the intent of the original quote was to say..let's stop taking about what is wrong and do what is right.. Now here is the delimea. What one thinks is right (or wrong) may not be in agreement with another. I guess I just wish more people were proactive about their beliefs. It pains me to see people sit around and complain rather than DO something to cause change. Change doesn't have to be dramitic. Change can be small and incremental. Complaint without action seems to be a waste of energy. Be the change you wish to see in the world.. Ghandi
