I was told that when heading north stay on 301 past I 10 and I can avoid Jacksonville. They said it is a faster way to connect to I95 somewhere north of Jacksonville. Has anyone tried this way?

Have taken this route many times. Just be patient going through the small towns and watch the speed limits, a couple of areas are known speed traps.

To clarify the route, 301 north to I10 heading east (it is a left hand turn on to the ramp), then take the I295 loop north which connects to I95 near the Jacksonville airport.

We have used it several times and like it. There is 2 to 4 lane construction but it does not slow traffic. Check you maps and cut over on A1A. This avoids the route 10 and 295 traffic.

Careful going thru Starke or you may get a ticket even though you were not speeding.

The AAA has only 2 designated " speed traps" in the US: Stark and Waldo Florida.

Does it make sense to go west to I75 and get on 310 a ways up?

I tried that, I think time wise it is about the same, adds a few miles going over to I75.

If you want nothing but interstates 301 is not a good idea. But 301 is 4 lanes and pretty wide open for much of the trip. Plus you get to see what Florida is like in a more rural setting.

Where's Waldo?

Travel over the speed limit and Waldo will find you.

OP was asking about 301 north of I10. Anybody take that route?

Wow - I misread that! I think taking it to I10 and then over to I295 avoids most of Jacksonville but I have never traveled north of I10 on 301. Probably a nice ride crossing into Georgia.

Waldo should be out of commission. There was an article in the Sun about a month ago that the Mayor and a bunch of the town employees were under arrest for taking in hundreds of thousand in fines and spending it on themselves and not the town. They even mentioned how they would move around the speed limit signs from day-to-day.

Taking I-75 to I-10 is faster driving, but might not be faster getting there since you're traveling an additional 65 miles. The US 301 to I-10 to I-295 to I-95 is the fastest route I have found.

If you want to avoid rush hour traffic, then stay on US 301 past I-10 for about 15 miles and in Callahan pick up A1A and go about ten miles and you'll be on I-95 north of Jacksonville by the airport.

You can continue on 301 north of I-10 up to the booming metropolis of Callahan. Turn right (east) on SR200 and it will take you to I-95 north of Jax and near the Fla/Ga border. SR200/A1A also continues on east to Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island.

Both Waldo and Starke are not the infamous speed traps of old ... when the speed limit went from 60 to 35 with no warning and city cops shooting radar 24/7/365. Both now have AMPLE "reduce your speed ahead" and clearly posted speed limits that ramp your speed down. If you get a ticket in either of them these days ... it is your fault.

That was actually the big city of Hampton, which is located between Starke and Waldo. They thought they could cash in when both of the other towns changed their warning and speed limit signage.

A lot depends on the day of the week and time of day. School buses are a factor. Also railroad traffic at grade crossings. I am a frequent traveler on I95 and have used A1A and 301 on occasion. I prefer the I10 to I295 route. Most, if not all, of the annoying construction has been completed. Also, the completion of the I 295 beltway around the east side of Jax has eased the traffic somewhat on that section of I295 going north on the west side.

BTW, I travel 301 to I10 a lot and have no problem with that route.

If you live in the southern end of the Villages and the I-75 exit in Wildwood is fairly close, I would take I-75 to the NW77th st exit just north of Ocala and jump on 301 there. Ocala can be a real pain in the a** with all the traffic lights. If you live in the north end of the Villages I would guess 301 would be a better option

I have never taken 301 north of I - 10, I always take it to I-10 E, I-295 and I-95. I have always wondered if there was a better way also by just staying on 301 N past I-10. Has anyone done this and if so where does 301 intersect with 95 ?

Never drove that way myself but my neighbors say they will never go that way again. Too many small towns and speed traps.

I have no issue with 301 north to route 10, but that is not what you asked, so...

We almost always take 301 - 10 - 295 around Jacksonville. The one time we did not take 10, we tried taking 301 north of route 10. It has been a while, but memory says I felt uncomfortable as it was a high speed road with no median. Never loved cars coming at me at 60.....

IMO 295 is a much better way to get around Jacksonville.

But you know what opinions are worth :D

We have traveled the 301 route several times and have found it to be a pleasuresable expirence. As stated , seveal small towns to watch your speed. It is a nice transsission off I 95 or other highways. Look out the window and enjoy. Whats the rush.???

It depends on which end of T V your leaving. 466A is close to 75. GPS sent us up 75 over to 301, up to 10 east to 295 to 95

Best route with little traffic & no speed traps: Take rt. 42 (on northside of TV) east to route 19, go north on 2 lane 19 thru the forest to rt. 27, then to the Jax beltway I-295 to Rt I-95.

We are currently in an RV park on 301/1 5 miles north of Callahan, Fl after driving up 301 today.

301 north of I-10 is being changed from a two lane to four lane divided Hwy - at the rate they are working on it, it will probably take 10 years or so. It is two lane with cones and reduced speeds for about 15 miles and a few times is down to one lane with ten minute or so delays. Take 301 to I-10 to I-295 to I-95.

Plenty of traffic cops in the small towns.
