Let me count the ways:

1) By landline and cell phone calls.

2) By computer

3) By credit and debit cards

4) By car as we drive around

5) By multiple cameras in public places

You can hardly go anywhere without leaving a trail. Some say it's good for safety sake. But we lose our privacy in the process. The day will come when we have no private life whatsoever. And there is the prospect that it may someday be used to limit our freedoms.

Imagine that all of your information is on record somewhere. Employers, insurers, governments and other organizations may use it against you. Let's say an employer looks you up on facebook and doesn't like what he/she sees. Governments can compile an "enemies list". A bank might turn you down for a loan after they see from your credit card purchases that you can't handle money very well. Merchants and organizations can target you for profit and/or donations.

In a documentary, I saw something that was funny and sad at the same time: This guy goes into a cafeteria and takes a couple of items to the cashier. He swipes his credit card, but it doesn't work. After a couple more swipes the phone rings in back of the cashier. She answers the phone and says, "yeah, he's right here." She hands the phone to the customer and it's his credit card company to tell him that his card is no good.

In today's Daily Sun there's an article: "Goodbye, billfold. Hello, smartphone." Some people can't wait until cash is completely eliminated. If that day ever comes, we will have no privacy whatsoever. There will be a record of where we shopped and what we bought.
