If you had only 1 day in New Orleans........

Will be in New Orleans for a day, not staying overnight. Where would you recommend for lunch? Is Commander's Palace worth it? I know there's probably better food (?) and it's very expensive, but it's one of those bucket list items. Not a strong item, more a consideration (I think I actually ate there once about 25 years ago....).

Is the on/off double decker trolley a good way to get around? My husband isn't up for a lot of constant walking.

Any other must see suggestions appreciated.

Cafe DuMonde on Jackson Square for chicory coffee and beignets. Also, just make an executive decision and stay over at least one night.

I went to High School in New Orleans. I have gone back occasionally but am not up to date on the latest restaurants. I don't think I would go to Commanders Palace however. Many others downtown that are good.

The Garden District has several (many) great places to eat. Café du Monde for sure. IF you can swing it the WW2 Museum is a "must see" (truly).

I know New Orleans like the back of my hand. If you want to eat with the locals, go to Lil Dizzy's on Elysian Fields. Great creole family, the Baquets, own and run it. A lot of folks will recommend Mother's, but it highly overrated. Mandina's on Canal is a great seafood restaurant...on the trolley car line. If you want to eat at a bucket list attraction, take the St Charles trolley out to the end...at Carrollton and take the short walk to Camellia Grill...or walk a little farther and go to the Oak Street Café. If you want a great Poboy, to out to Parkway Bakery on Bayou St John or Mahoney's out Magazine. Another bucket list item is a muffaletta from Central Grocery, but if I wanted a Muff, I would go to Cochon Butcher.

Several good restaurants on Frenchman Street. My last recommendation is where I usually eat...any of the little restaurants in the French Market...my favorites are the World Famous N'Awlins Café and Spice Emporium and Meals From the Heart.

If you want a burger go to Port of Call on Esplanade, a pizza, Angeli on Decatur or Louisiana Pizza Kitchen by the French Market.

Moved here from Louisiana in January. My favorite restaurants are:Emeril's and
Commanders Palace.But, if I only had one day. Go to Jackson Square, see the city by taking a horse drawn carriage ride which is right there. See the St Louis Cathedral, the oldest in North America. Then eat at Muriel's, 801 Chartres. A Fantastic restaurant. You can probably make a reservation. Have a great trip. The World WarII museum is wonderful, but it takes about 4 hours to see it all

There are so many good suggestions so far and it's hard to go too far wrong. We love many restaurants, but for lunch we just love Mr. B's on Royal near Iberville, although I also agree with Louisiana Pizza Kitchen by the French Market (I'm drooling for their smoked salmon and caviar pizza now) and Parkway Bakery (if you call first and talk to Jay Nix he will treat you right when you get there and might even give you a sample of several things before you order). If you are there for dinner we just love Louisiana Bistro and Chef Mars who has a fantastic Feed Me dinner where you can choose a 3,4 or 5 course option and he will customize dinner to your liking and food needs/allergies in my case and then after each course is brought to you he will come out and tell you how he concocted it and why he chose it. It's on Dauphine near Burgundy. Good luck and have fun. We have stayed in NOLA for a month at a time and not had time to eat at all the places we love! I hope you love it. I would begin at Cafe DuMonde on Decatur Street for a beignet and chicory coffee then walk and tour the French Market at 2 French Market Place, just down the road from Cafe DuMonde. Circle back on Decatur and stop at the Central Grocery for their famous Muffalato sandwich, but share the sandwich with whomever you are with because it is huge.

We were in there in March before our cruise and the trolley was a great way to see a lot of things. You can hop on and off where ever you wanted an it was great. The people on the trolley are very knowledgeable. You see a lot in just a little bit of time.
