View Full Version : What's behind your TOTV name and picture?

Barbi
01-13-2008, 10:27 AM
I'm slightly curious about the names and pictures we choose to use for TOTV. Some of us have a straight forward simple use of our first name and many have a "handle" we go by. Some of us put our real pictures out there others put avatars out there.

What draws you to use or not use your real name & pictures?

What motivates you to change your picture from time to time?

If you use a "handle" what is the story, the soul, the essence, roots, spirit, simplicity, mystery behind the name you choose.

PIC: The pic is my daughter and me shortly after she moved in with me (the adoption was finalized 4 years later due to some major court battles). Changing a pic takes effort, so you guys are stuck with this for awhile.

NAME: When she'd been with me about 3 months, she was playing with the snow globes in the dining room while I was cleaning the bathroom. I told her to put the snow globe down. She came running in and asked how I knew. I told her I now had "mommy eyes in the back of my head." Later, when I sat down, she started parting my hair in the back. This continued halfway down my back. All of a sudden, with eyes as huge as I'd ever seen, she said, "You don't have eyes in the back of your head .... you're a WITCH" Took me about 3 months to get her to come near me after that.

Well, when I had to come up with an online name, she looked at me like I was nuts as I struggled to come up with something that fit me. "Duh, Mom, redwitch." And I've been RW ever since. (Yes, the hair is red and I think she now pronounces the W with a B.)

Simple. The picture is me enjoying one of my passions in life. That was taken in front of one of many a favorite winery in Sonoma CA. Life is to short to drink cheap wine. ;D My ID is also part of a favorite passtime l2ridehd is short hand for "love to ride Harley Davidsons".

01: When I chose this nic years ago someone already had taken it on the site I was on so I had to add the numbers behind it to get it.

My pic: I was in a flamboyant mood at the time. http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh96/renielarson/twirlyhippy.gif It will change often-sometimes you'll see the real me and others times you won't.

Well, mine's pretty easy. Kathie is my real name and that's me in the picture a few years ago (acting shy, of course ) but its how I still feel today:

[center]Glamorous, charismatic, fun-loving

and... ummmm.. let's see what other adjectives did the thesaurus mention...

oh yes, a lot younger and skinnier.....

Oh Well, I can dream, can't I!!!

Ok, Barbi, now explain your picture please. Thanks, Kathie

OK Barbi! I've been waiting for this. You have to tell us about yours too! By the way great Topic to put out there, I love it!!!!

Mine is so easy its boring! its me, (just a few short years ago) LOL! Time goes so fast I just cant remember how long ago it actually was! (And if you believe that one, well you know the rest)

Thats my real name and Im wondering if its really a good thing to be so darn honest! Live and learn.

It was taken in Hawaii and the bird I fell in love with in a pet shop. They tried to convince me to buy as much as I wanted that birdie, wouldnt hear of it. They basically stuff them in a cardboard toilet paper roll and ship it to you by air. Couldnt stand the thought.

So tell us Barbie who is the gorgeous girl in the picture????? ;)

ouma1938
01-14-2008, 12:42 AM
Name comes from my South African heritage, Ouma is Grandma in Afrikaans, and 1938 is the year I was born. So, ouma1938.

The picture is of one of my birds, a cockatiel ("rooster"tiel when its censored) named Loopy. He is a little love and gives me a wolf whistle first thing every morning. Its fun to wake up to.

I think I owe a big thanks to all who answered. You are wonderful!! However I still see a lot of interesting names unexplained so keep the posts coming. I had so many thoughts as I read your replies I decided to capture them in one note.

Hope2B – My real name is Barbara --- professional photo just a few “women” years back and similar to your name. I know, boring – I may change my name to something with more spirit if I can figure out how do it.

RedWitch - loved your story and photo. Shows compassion and fun. I doubt your daughter uses the B.

I2ridehd – You too are inspiring me to change my name to something with more passion.

Avista – new years resolution to live on a street in TV by year end

English – I’m still guessing at yours but think I got it

Donna – I love horses and your choice of picture

Brightspot –I think a few guys are interested in the picture and agree grandchildren are your name.

Kathie – You know I’m looking for Ken and need your help. I’m counting on you.

Barb1191 – I want to be in that picture too.

Nonie – You’re not boring and I like your name. Glad you didn’t ship the bird.

Ouma1938 – Learned a new name for grandma. You and Nonie need to get together for birdie fun day.

Great Fumar – I bow to you.

When I moved here in July I was homesick and husbandless so when I registered for TOTV I used MSNPA - "Missing Pennsylvania" (Missin PA). Not so much homesick any longer, but I will stick with this handle.

Chelsea was the name of my first cat. Given to me when I was really ill for about a year and a half. I think he pulled me through. Was reading an Agatha Christie book at the time and Chelsea was taken from the mystery. Have a replica of the Chelsea street sign from London in my office. The picture is a sketch about 9 years ago done in Paris. As I've told others and it's true, I told the artist I would pay him double if he would make it very flattering and he did! Actually I should have paid him triple Lol Younger, thinner and dreamy (I had just gotten engaged to my husband that day.) wav

Taltarzac
01-16-2008, 02:58 PM
Taltarzac is from the first 3 letters of the first names of people dear to me. For instance, the Beatles (John, Paul, Ringo, and George) would be Johpauringeo. The Three Stooges in one of their various manifestations would be Moecurlar. (Moe, Curly, and Larry).

My current picture is Ma Kettle (Marjorie Main). She shares my birthday 2-24 like the other people I have had up as my avatars like Winslow Homer (birthday 2-24-1836) and one of the Grimm brothers of the Fairy Tales fame. I would rather put up Billy Zane (also born February 24) but I am sure all the pictures of him are protected by the copyright of the photographer.

I had Will Rogers up for a while too just because I like a lot of his views.

Boomer
01-17-2008, 03:29 AM
-no picture, but as for my name...

Boomer - obvious reason

BeBack - A little story...

Remember the days of those high pressure sales pitches for timeshares for everything from campsites to condos to cruises? A free meal could bait you through the door. The sales people had a name for those who would show up, eat, listen politely to the spiel for the deal that was good "for today only" and then try to make a gracious exit by saying that they would be back. They called those people the "BeBacks" and knew they would never be back.

I visited TV and I listened and I learned stuff. But I might actually be back some day.

All right , As long as everyone else is doing it I guess I will too.
I used to winter in Destin FL ...One day while coming down the elevator with a friend I noticed on the wall a sign that said "NO SMOKING , NO FUMAR" Upon reaching the lobby I complained to the desk that someone had been
Fumaring in the elevator, they asked "smoking ??" I answered " no not smoking , fumaring and it smells terrible "..Well they never let me forget it and still call me Mr. Fumar to this day....I really don't think the girls at THE ISLANDER IN DESTIN know what my real name is....
PS Sometimes when I would leave to go play golf one of the girls would speak over the loudspeaker in the parking lot "FUMAR HAS LEFT THE BUILDING"......
I still send them a Christmas Card and sign it FUMAR..... ;D ;D ;D

Could have sworn we did this before, but some of us (me?) have a few memory problems. Current memories, that is, not ancient memories. My name comes from the 4th grade, I think, when I was starting a new school. When the teacher introduced me, the cutest boy in the whole class said oh, no, not another Linda! As I remember there were 6 Lindas that year. Wonder what happened to that boy? Did God smite him for embarrassing me?

Guess what another Linda, my real name is Linda too! I certainly know that feeling and also tons of girls in grade school and high school sharing our name. If someone called out that name in my high school hallway, half the girls would turn around. My avatar isn't tough to guess - I LOVE golf! That's why I'm choosing TV. I've used my real pic a few times but I change it to a golf pic most of the time.

The handle is obvious also - I live near Boston and love the city. I have that handle on almost every site on the Internet so if you are playing on-line poker or the like and see the name Russ_Boston, it is probably me!

Muncle
02-22-2008, 09:12 PM
My TOTV name is one I used to use on NTN trivia and is courtesy of one of my nieces and her friends. About 20 -25 years ago, I used to return to KC periodically to visit family. At a pub one evening, one of my nieces introduced me to her friends as "This is my uncle Bill." (She said it rather rapidly, running the words together.) Well, one of the rather cute young girls started calling me Muncle Bill. Hey, when you're a 40 year old bachelor and some good looking 25 year old girl calls you anything, you respond. Unfortunately, the name stuck among some of the girls. I was back recently for a funeral and a rather fashionable middle-aged woman walked up, hugged me, and said "Hey Muncle!"

About the avatar/picture: I can't see it from here so I don't know which one it is. Probably has no significance whatsoever, and will likely be changed in a short while.

It's unfortunate that the avatars do change in old posts whenever you update your profile. Kinda makes posts like Red's earlier one seem a bit strange. Here's the picture of the blushing bride and her comment that her pic shows her with her daughter. :yikes:

I enjoyed reading how people chose their names on TOTV.

If I want a good laugh I know I can always count on Hyacinth Bucket to provide one.

I really like the show KEEPING UP APPEARANCES, a British Sitcom.

Patricia Routledge is an award winning actress - she plays Hyacinth Bucket.

If you want to know more about Hyacinth please go to http://kuacentral.com/

If you click on postcards you will easily see what I look like, if you click on cookbook the title will tell you even more about "Our Hyacinth" and the name of the show.

I also enjoy many other Britcoms - Does anyone else watch them?

Sidney Lanier
02-28-2008, 01:59 AM
I guess it's time for me to 'fess up. Thirty years ago we loaded the kids into the car, towing the popup, and traveling down to Florida from New York State. Outside of Savannah we found ourselves in a campground adjacent to the Marshes of Glynn. 'Wow,' I thought, 'this is the place made famous by Sidney Lanier!' So I signed in at the campground as 'Sidney Lanier' rather than my own name. Remember, in those days everything was handwritten; the owner of the campground simply copied the name into his book without batting an eye. 'This is fun,' I thought, and from that point, wherever we were, I signed in using a name historically relevant to the area where we were. No one ever picked up on it. When we got back to Virginia, I signed in as 'Thomas Jefferson,' and as usual no response. I should have signed in as 'George Washington'.... Ever since then, when I need to use a pseudonym, it's traditionally 'Sidney Lanier'!

Sidney,

I think I am hijacking a thread here, but I don't even care anymore. I think I may have even "diatribed" :) somewhere on here today which I swore I would never do.

Anyway, I have to tell you that I like your name and the reason behind it.

And I just have to share somethiing.

We all remember the days before electronic pagers when crowded restaurants paged you over a loudspeaker when it was your turn to be seated. My version of fun was to tell the hostess our name was Donner. Sometimes the highlight of the evening was hearing the voice over the speakers calling out, "The Donner party, your table is waiting."

I wanted to see why Sidney Lanier is Sidney Lanier, and I had a recollection of some thread long ago.

I thought it would be fun to see the reason for some of our newer members to tell us about their forum names.

NJblue
09-11-2008, 01:56 PM
Well, my current avatar should be a tip off to where the "blue" component of my name comes from (as in "Go Blue!!!"). I grew up in Michigan and went to good 'ol U of M. I still have many good feelings about the state of Michigan and my feelings about the Wolverines borders on rabid (although this football season looks like it will test how well my devotion holds up during trying times).

The "NJ" component reflects my current residency, a state where I have spent virtually all of my adult life and one which I have adopted as "home". Hopefully, at some point in the not-so-distant future I will adopt TV as my home. Then I may change my name to TVBlue.

WSOX47
09-11-2008, 02:33 PM
WSOX47:

Well, when I decided to send my first note the pressure for a name---one I would actually re-call was there---mounting and a bublin'. I thought I could use my own name but that did not seem to be the spirit of the forum. so what to do--- I decided not to post and that was that!!!

My second explanation: since I have actually posted, and do have that memory thing: WSOX47 = Chicago WHITE SOX #47. Been a long time fan and season ticket holder (actually, 2008 I didn't renew due to uncertainty based on retirement and possible relocation), and #47 = my uniform number.

Peazoup
09-11-2008, 07:07 PM
A few years ago when I first wanted to sign up for and start playing on eBay, I must have tried dozens and dozens of ID names, but they were all taken. I then decided that since I was raised in Montreal, I would use the nick name "peasoup" which is what many affectionately called French Canadians. Since peasoup was already taken, I just changed the s to a z, hence peazoup. The picture is of my backyard in June when the hydrangea are the most beautiful.

09-11-2008, 08:55 PM
Since I really have no nickname, (and obviously no imagination) I used my e-mail address as my name for the forum. I have changed my picture a few times to show my grandchildren, and I had my "Medium" self there for a while as well. I had this squirrel picture up for a while, and I am putting him back up again now. I have an inquisitive squirrel in my backyard that comes up to my doorwall and looks in on me when I am on the computer. He watches me through the window while I am talking to you, so I thought I would put a squirrel there to watch you while you read it.

23 yrs. ago I told the owner of the restaurant to fill my station, 14 tables, on a super busy Friday night. At the end of the night, in front of staff he says "Rhonda, YOU ROCK!" Someone else said, "Rockin Rhonda!". It stuck. 5 years later, at the new job (15 years there) the owners son called me RR one night, I told him the story and the rest is history. My kids friends still call me rokin! It has nothing to do with my love of dancing!! or Rocky and the Rollers!! LOL

After our first Crispers meeting, Kathie or HB (help - can't remember!!!) christened me with wiwi (wee wee) and that has made it easier to remember! Picture - Nothing, it happen to be one of the canned ones I could pick from on the forum and he made me look good!

Name - "Dadspet" I guess it sounds strange on this forum but it's the License plate on my sport car " a 1971 V12 Jaguar XKE Series 3 ". The kids decided to get me a custom plate for it one year since I spent a lot of time playing/cleaning/tinkering with it > it was my pet.

With all the car shows in TVs I kind of wish now I had a 2 car plus golf cart garage so I could bring it down with me. But, actually I wouldn't have much time for her now with all the other TV activities we are involved in. Jags/Pets don't like being ignored - they require attention.

I did bring the plates down and have them on my red Precedent Club Car so if you happen to see me or pass me by (yes its a 19.x mph cart) give me a toot toot!

Mine - NJGranny - describes me. I'm from NJ and I'm a "granny." Also a great granny. I started using that screen name a few years back and just stick with it because it's too hard to remember screen names if you have several. :-)

Picture is me.

What I'm confused about is several people mentioned they had certain pictures up, but what I see isn't what they're describing. I'm not hard to confuse.

Redwitch - especially liked your story. Reminds me of the time one of my granddaughters decided that I was a vampire. It took awhile to convince her that her fears were groundless. :-)

But I might actually be back some day.
. . .

OK. That is a really old quote. And it is from me. I have just quoted myself. How pathetic is that. It is what I have been driven to doing this afternoon.

Fall is in the air and I have found myself in the grip of some sort of cleaning frenzy here at Boomer Base. So I thought I would sit down at this computer in the kitchen and try to get over it. I have the financial news blaring in the background, and I need to get over that, too.

And I put the old post up there so this one would maybe make a little sense.

So here is what I have decided to think about instead of all that other stuff right now:

I want to lose the BeBack from my screen name. I do not like it anymore. And a couple of things have happened since I signed on last November. First of all, I plan to "be back" to TV. And secondly, as I have come to terms with the vast number of posts I have written here, I realize that the fact that I will "be back" to TOTV goes without saying.

So that whole "BeBack" thing just is not working for me anymore. Silly. I know. But what the heck. It has become way too obvious.

Therefore, I am trying to figure out how to lose the baggage of that last name I no longer like. I want to be just plain Boomer. And I am actually working on an avatar to go with that name. Last November I had not even heard of avatars.

So anyway, I hope to lose the BeBack soon. If I can figure it all out at some point, I will become Boomer, just Boomer, that's it.

I just want to go the route of my fellow boomer, Cherilyn Sarkisian.

Oh what a beeeeeeeyoooootiful moorrrrrning,
Oh what a beeeeeeeyoooootiful daaaaaaay,
Got rid of that goofy name "BeBack,"
Everything's going my way.

Well, actually and obviously and, of course, everything is not going my way. But that's the best I could do this morning, could not think of an original rhyme. But hey, little tiny things working right are good, too.

And now, I can just be Boomer. You know. Like Cher.

I wonder if I should go shopping for a new wardrobe to go with this one name thing. Somehow I do not picture my fellow boomer Cher sitting around in her kitchen, wearing flannel, and typing a guzillion posts on some internet site. But maybe she will join us after she retires.

You just never know.

I sure didn't when I showed up here almost a year ago.

You just never know.

Hey, today -- lose the last name. Tomorrow -- a blog?

- -Nope, I don't think so. I still have not figured out the spellcheck download.

But I am working on an avatar.

Boomer, just Boomer

Rozzie has always been my family nickname since I can remember. All my friends on MB's I post on call me Rozzie in person, as I always tell them I may not answer to my real name--Robyn!

The pic is of me in my most very favorite place in the world. Epcot/World Showcase, enjoying my favorite adult beverage. :)

Let me say this about Robyn/Rozzie. I own two of the sweetest daughters you'd ever want to meet, but that girl Rozzie is so caring of her mother!! She is a sweetie. And pretty and smart too. And if you want to know what she does? She is a nurse. Plus she has dog children and a kittie child and to hear her mother talk she also has a great husband. I can't find anything wrong with this kid.

When I first started chatting way back when, I was living in Mexico Beach, in the panhandle of Florida. After living in gloomy Wisconsin for years, everything seemed to sunny to me so I chose the nick sunnyfl7 which I still use in the old chat room. I switched to Sunnymaryann because I have to have a registered nick in so many places and I chose to use my own name added to sunny so that I could use one universal name everywhere.

The picture is of me at Disney in Oct and I put it there cause I hate how fat I am and it is supposed to be an incentive to either lose weight or live with it.

Kitty (not really Lecroix)

When you change pictures on this board, apparently the new picture goes with your past posts (similarly, even your older posts will show your current number of posts). So, this thread has some interesting combinations of current pics and old explanations. For instance:

Several buffalo: "My daughter and me."

A good-looking blonde: "My Missouri Fox Trotter Rusty."

A cat: "One of my birds (inside the cat, perhaps?)."

Two dogs: "Me at Disney."

-------

And my name? I use the same name on about a half-dozen message boards. This is cyberspace and I am usually the old geezer on those boards. If anyone asks, I say I was short of cash and had to sell a vowel to Wheel of Fortune but the truth is, it started as an AOL screen name back when AOL limited them to 10 characters.

And no picture because I'm so good looking, it might excite too many of the ladies on the board.

Yeah! That would be cool.
Oh, my picture is me with one of my granddaughters, Olivia, at her dance recital a year ago. She calls me KiKi. KiKi Lecroix sounds pretty steamy too.

My name is my nickname and first initial of the last not very original.

The picture is of a stainglass project I am thinking of trying next (as my husbands crest is a flying crane design.) It was on my computer so I stuck it in not much thinking went into it. Wish my pics of the fireworks over lake washington I took from my deck came out but I can't take a good picture to save my soul :yuck: so you are stuck with cranes for now.

Most of you are much more original than I was.

The name reflects a lack of originality at the time. I belong to a motorcycle club, and for years was known as 'Coyote", native american a trickster. Yes, I was always the guy playing jokes. I am trying to live that down.

I switch Avatars around a little. Sometimes I will use my picture......since we are frogs, I like this one.
When I introduce myself to people here they always say....Darrell and his other brother Darrell...........hence otherbruddadarrell
Much easier then the other nickname I had with the Veterans Motorcycle riders groups I belonged to (AVMRA American Veterans Motorcycle Riders Association and The Many Horses Tribe Of The Calumet Region, also The Worldwide Wimpy Whiney Woosies Breakfast Club Riders)........I was named Tomatoface in AVMRA and Eating Bearclaws in the other.
