A few minutes ago, I saw a large brown cat in my yard that looked like a small mountain lion. Anyone have any idea what it could have been? We live in Sunset Pointe.

I have doing some research on my own and from what I can tell, it looked like a small Florida panther, but they are supposed to live in south Florida. I wish I could have gotten a picture.

Did it have a short tail? Could be a bobcat.
Florida panthers are endangered and only 50-70 remain in the wild, in south Florida. The Florida Panther Society, Inc. (http://www.panthersociety.org/faq.html)

I thought it might have been a bobcat at first, but I looked them up and all the pictures had spots and this didn't have them

Here's a Florida Panther. I played golf with a fellow once that said he saw a panther on Cane Garden Hibiscus hole #3. That's not too far from Heron where they've seen wild boar. Do you live in Pennecamp or that area?

A few weeks ago I was travelling on 301 headed to I75 and sure enough I saw what I believe to be a Florida panther run across the road and into the woods.

Here is a motion camera photo of a panther chasing a boar taken east of Gainesville.

I live about 1-1/2 blocks from Heron golf course. All I know is it was too big to be someone's pet.

A fox went running thru the village of Charlotte this week, so anything is possible. Poor thing...Hope he made it to wherever it was going.
If you live in Sunset Pointe, it was a bobcat. Saw one walking between houses carrying a large bird (lunch). Stubby tail.

Sounds like another pretty good reason to make sure your little dog or cat does not venture outside on their own. They also could do a lot of damage to grandchildren.

Bobcats usually aren't interested in humans, however,
those who walk their dogs on those retractable
leashes, be aware.
While you are walking and yakking away with someone
or on your cell phone,
and your dog is 10 ft. or more behind you, sniffing away,
your pup could easily become breakfast, lunch or dinner
and you would never be any the wiser until it's too late.

It is getting more common to see Florida panthers around Crystal River. Saw one twice near where I lived just off of Dixie Bay. Awesome!

Wow! Lucky you. I'm envious.
They are beautiful animals.
